Understanding Student Motivation Cycles in Distance Learning &
Developing a Research-Based Motivation Guide for UPOU Undergraduate Students
I believe in lifelong learning as the cornerstone of personal and professional growth.
Education doesn't end with formal schooling but continues throughout one's life, adapting to new challenges and opportunities. This philosophy drives my research into student motivation, as I seek to understand how we can foster sustained engagement with learning beyond immediate academic requirements.
What I've learned through this research is that the struggles we face as distance learners aren't obstacles to overcome - they're experiences that develop our capacity for sustained growth throughout life. When we recognize routine fatigue or practice strategic disengagement, we're actually developing sophisticated self-regulation skills that will serve us far beyond our UPOU years.
Through this project, I hope to contribute insights that support others in their own lifelong learning journeys, recognizing that every challenge we navigate makes us more resilient learners for whatever comes next.
To God, for grace through every moment of doubt and the unexpected ways this journey deepened my faith. In quiet hours of research and writing, I found not just academic growth, but connection to something greater.
To UPOU, the BES program, and the Faculty of Education, for creating the academic home where I learned empathy and service alongside knowledge. This institution taught me that education fosters compassion and understanding across all walks of life.
To my gatekeeper and statistician, Mx. Darlene San Juan, whose expertise provided the methodological backbone of this work. Your scholarly brilliance transformed uncertainty into clarity and became the invisible architecture that made this research possible.
To my family for unwavering support through every milestone and setback. Your encouragement gave me strength when the path seemed uncertain.
And finally, to my partner, my anchor. Your faith in me made this possible. You celebrated my smallest victories and held space for my growth. Your belief has always been stronger than my doubts. This achievement is as much yours as it is mine.
Every page carries the imprint of your support, wisdom, and care.
I am Alexis Faith S. Gonzales, a Bachelor of Education Studies student at the University of the Philippines Open University. My academic journey has been shaped by my interest in understanding the psychological dimensions of online learning experiences, particularly how students navigate the unique challenges of distance education.
As a distance learner, I've developed a keen interest in educational psychology and instructional design. My research interests focus on student motivation, engagement strategies, and the impact of learning environment structures on educational experiences.
