Creating a concise research presentation forced me to identify my study's essential narrative, revealing both its academic significance and practical relevance to distance learners' lived experiences

The Experience

Today marks a significant milestone in my research journey as I completed my townhall presentation for EDS 199 (See Attachment J.3). After several days of focused work, I've created a comprehensive 20-slide deck that captures the essence of my research on student motivation in repetitive distance learning cycles. I carefully structured the presentation to tell a compelling story, beginning with my personal connection to the topic, illustrating the weekly routine at UPOU, explaining the concept of routine fatigue, and highlighting the theoretical frameworks guiding my investigation.

I'm particularly pleased with how I've incorporated preliminary findings from my interviews, especially the insight that some students deliberately disengage from MyPortal for periods as a strategic "preservation tactic" to sustain long-term motivation. This challenges conventional views that consistent engagement is always optimal. The visual design using a clean, professional aesthetic with UPOU's color scheme helps communicate complex concepts clearly while maintaining audience engagement. Creating this presentation forced me to distill my research into its most essential components, which was challenging but incredibly valuable.

One unexpected benefit was that preparing for questions that might arise during the townhall helped me identify potential gaps in my research design that I hadn't previously considered. For instance, I realized I should be more explicit about how my findings might apply differently to various student populations (working professionals, full-time students, etc.). This insight will strengthen my final analysis and the resulting Student Motivation Guide. I rehearsed the presentation several times, working to keep it within the allotted time while ensuring I covered all key points. Though I'm naturally nervous about presenting, I feel confident in both the content and my preparation. The townhall will provide valuable feedback from faculty and peers that will inform the next stages of my research.

Looking Forward

This preparation process has reinforced the importance of clearly communicating research findings in accessible ways. Moving forward, I'll apply this skill to the development of my Student Motivation Guide, ensuring it translates complex theoretical findings into practical strategies for distance learners. I also plan to incorporate any feedback from the townhall presentation to strengthen both my research methodology and final outputs.
