Lesson 2: E-inclusion

E-inclusion

One of the things I have learned in e-inclusion is that we must ensure that everyone should belong to the mainstream because it is everyone's right. Everyone must be included and should gain access to the developments enabled by ICT. We must also be mindful of the learners who are at risk of being excluded. Also, taking into account the tenets of e-inclusion: accessibility, availability, and usability. Being a teacher situated in a rural area, these 3 tenets are hardly met. In the discussion, it was stated that teachers are at the center of inclusion thus requiring teachers to adopt specific teaching competencies for ICT such as the ability to select proper ICT and non-ICT tools, methodological point of view in making use of these resources in promoting active learning, curate and identify accessible resources, which are usable and available for the majority of the students. Perhaps these are the things that I can try to do better in a real-life setting.

Ways in addressing the following situation in the classroom without compromising the chances to use technology whether minimally or maximally:

  1. Accessibility for students with a physical and sensory disability

  • Reminding other students in being tactful with their words

  • Pairing students with physical disabilities with students who are able and give them activities together that would let them participate in active learning

  • Give them the equal chance to explore the ICT tools and resources and explore more resources and tools that would accommodate their needs

  1. lack of connectivity or availability of computing tools.

  • giving grace period or stretching deadlines to students who are experiencing connectivity issues

  • Before, I only had synchronous sessions with students perhaps once a week or once every 2 weeks because not all of them have the means to load their phones on every schedule. What I did was, I used Facebook messenger in announcing that I posted material or activity for them to be aware of and prepare. I also give them a schedule of our synchronous session. Every reminder, I post it in the messenger because I have experienced that some students won't be notified if something is posted in the Google Classroom.

  • During major exams, in order not to compromise the reliability of my exams, I give them a schedule that they must strictly follow. I announced it weeks in advance, I even announced it days before for them to prepare and they would not give me reasons.

  1. Gender equality in classroom instruction.

  • One thing I have learned from my past lessons is breaking the biases and eliminating stereotyping between genders. Gone are the days when tasks were for specific genders. Although there are still existing gender-specific roles especially involving physical labor, I will enlighten my students on the importance of promoting gender equality in the classroom.
