“Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.” – E. Y. Harburg
Critical Listening is different from Analytical Listening because the latter goes beyond the technical aspect of music and focuses on interpretation and feelings. However, it is important that the technical side is properly executed in order to achieve the meaning and the emotions that it was meant to trigger.
Here are 10 random songs I have chosen from the Album - Now That is What I Call Music! 98 and my interpretation of the songs.
When we get hurt so many times, the scar no longer heals. The pain becomes so unbearable that we lock our hearts so we do not go through it again. We refuse to take another leap even if it means that we loose the person we love.
We all have loved and hurt in the past and these feelings resonated in the song. The dramatic entrance - the slow and low piano key highlighted voice of the singer, coupled by the sad lyrics have set the mood immediately. The gradual addition of the other elements has maintained the emotions of hurt and sadness through out the song.
Sam Smith's voice is perfect for the song - not too strong and masculine and sounded vulnerable. The back-up singers in "Im way to good at goodbyes" also added to the dramatic effect.
Just like how the feelings was established at the onset, the same strategy was used at the end. This was great strategy because it has left lingering feelings even after it the song has ended.
This song tells us a story of an Irish girl (Galway is a place in Western Ireland) who fell in love with an Englishman. It describes young love and spontaneity.
The theme is very simple but the sequence of events described in the lyrics gave it an interesting twist. The story is highlighted by eliminating distractions during the narrative. By removing or reducing the strength of some instruments, the audience is able to focus more on the story.
The music was able to provide more context and identity to the song through the inclusion of an Irish Fiddle specifically when "My pretty little Galway Girl" is sang. The song aims to trigger feelings of fun and adventure and this was achieved with the fast beats.
There are some people who we build connections with who are not easy to forget. Even if the relationship did not go as we planned, we still want these people to be part of our lives. Friendship after a relationship has ended is the theme of this song.
The lyrics of the song has effectively communicated the hope of saving friendship with an old flame. However, the sincerity was not captured. The strength of the vocals and the instruments is balanced and constant throughout the song. It seems that the focus of the song is to create a great dance music and not on the message nor the emotions.
When we are in love we experience a rollercoaster of emotions. The craziness that we encounter makes the relationship dynamic and is what keeps us hanging on.
I felt the frustration embedded in the song. The singers were able to convey this feeling using their vocals. The instruments were also used to highlight the strength of their emotions. The sounds are subtle while their frustrations are being described then more prominent with stronger emotions specifically - "I love it, I hate it...i just keep coming back to you."
"I found peace in your violence..I've been quiet for too long ." The song is about learned helplessness in a relationship and the desire to get out of it.
The message was a bit difficult to understand because of how the singer was enunciating the words. I had to look up the lyrics to make sense of the song. This is not entirely the fault of the singer because it may be language barrier from my end as well.
The mellow start of the song gave me an indication that it is an emotional song. This was sustained by the singer's voice quality and the additional vocals in the background. The choice of instruments complemented the song and it further heightened the emotions that it was trying to ignite.
There are relationships that instead of making us feel complete, makes us feel the opposite - leave us feeling lonelier. Despite of this realization, we still choose to stay in the relationship. We loose our rationality, go with the flow, even if we know that it will end badly.
The carefree attitude regardless of the consequences was captured with the interplay of the musical instruments. The highlight of the song that displays the most emotion is in the Chorus. The instruments over power the vocals which bring listeners to a state of euphoria that urges them to just let go and dance to the music.
Cola is about dancing and sipping cola at the same time. There is no story but the phrase "she can't tell the difference yet" indicates that there is more to the Cola.
The song is meant to be dance music and it was able to deliver. The lyrics was just a few lines that has been played repeatedly throughout the song. Nevertheless, the lyrics is an important part of the song because it complement the music.
Some people consider crying as a sign of weakness especially for men. This song tries to break this by encouraging people to just cry it all out because it is a good way to heal.
The message of the song is clear because of the lyrics. This was further enhanced with the a subtle music during narration so that it does not compete and distract the listener from understanding the message. However, the disco theme of the music caused a bit of displaced emotions. The song is about crying and I feel like dancing to the music. Regardless, it is going to be effective in putting someone's in grief in control and bring positivity instead of sulking, which might have been the objective of the song in the first place.
The song is about grief over a lost love and hoping to get things back. Rain signifies the lingering feelings of pain and sadness.
The first verse of the song coupled with the subtle music created a dramatic mood that matches the singer's feelings of grief. The subsequent melody was upbeat but the message and the feeling is still clear because the interplay of instruments did not overpower the vocals. In addition, the singer's voice effectively matched the emotion of the song making it very convincing to the listeners.
Wall of glass refers to the secrets and lies that we use to protect ourselves with. But since it is made of glass, others see right through it. When we keep on with this and keep throwing lies around, it will come back and and hunt us and shatter us in the process.
This song lives up to expectations in terms of the mix of instruments in a rock music. The beat is strong and the sound of the electric guitar and the drums are very audible. The instruments are very important because it heightens the emotions of the song. The cryptic approach in communicating the message of the song also contributed to its powerful delivery.
