Dr. Ingeborg Schwenzer

Ingeborg Schwenzer is Dean of the Swiss International Law School and Professor emerita of Private Law at the University of Basel, Switzerland. Additionally, she is an adjunct professor at Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia, and has been an adjunct professor at City University, Hong Kong, and at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.

She has published numerous books and more than 200 articles in the fields of law of obligations (contracts, tort law and unjust enrichment, sales law both domestic and international), commercial arbitration as well as family law. In particular, she is the editor and main contributor of the world's leading Commentary on the Convention on the International Sale of Goods (CISG) (4th edition, Oxford, OUP: 2016) and its German, Spanish, Portuguese and Turkish counterparts.

From 2011 to 2018 Ingeborg Schwenzer has been the chair of the CISG Advisory Council. She is also active in all areas of legal practice. In particular, she regularly acts as arbitrator, counsel and legal expert in international disputes.

Diana Correa

Professor Diana Correa teaches international arbitration and international law, both public and private (international contracts), and she also leads the International Contract Law LLM as well as the Arbitration Day at University Externado of Colombia. Besides her academic carreer, Professor Correa acts exclusively as arbitrator, although prior to this choice, Professor Correa did act as counsel, administrative secretary and asistant to arbitral tribunals. She has collected a rich experience of more than 50 arbitrations, both, national and international, in several sectors, such as construction, energy, infrastructure, telecoms, transportation, and plenty of commercial contracts, which have been conducted under differnt arbitration rules among ICC, ICSID, UNCITRAL, BCC, LCC, CeCAP, and others. Professor Correa is Chair of the Colombian Chapter of the Spanish and Iberoamerican Arbitration Club, and is a member of the ADR and Arbitration Global International Chamber of Commerce Commission. For 3 consecutive years (2022-2024), Professor Correa has been selected as Global Leader in international arbitration by the prestigious Who's Who Legal and GAR raking.


Renato Treves

Renato Treves is a Counsel in the International Arbitration Group of Curtis Mallet-Colt & Mosle LLP.  His practice focuses on public international law, investor-state disputes and international commercial arbitrations. 

He has significant experience in State-to-State disputes before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and ad hoc arbitral tribunals representing States in high-profile and politically sensitive cases dealing with various issues of public international law, including law of the sea, treaty interpretation and international human rights.

Mr. Treves has also many years of experience in international arbitrations representing States in disputes under the rules of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).

He has advised States and State-owned entities in various sectors including energy and public infrastructure on matters such as expropriation, interpretation of bilateral investment treaties, issues of jurisdiction and admissibility, settlement transactions and enforcement of arbitral awards.

Mr. Treves has also been recognized among Who’s Who Legal – Arbitration Future Leaders 2024.

Elsa Ortega

Elsa Ortega has more than twenty years of experience in large and complex cases of international commercial arbitration, both ad hoc and administered under the arbitration rules of several arbitral institutions, such as the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the International Centre for Dispute Resolution (ICDR), and the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), acting as party counsel, arbitrator and chair of arbitral tribunals in numerous cases in diverse sectors and industries. Since July 2022, she is head of the arbitration practice of Creel, García-Cuellar, Aiza y Enriquez in Mexico City. 

Ms. Ortega has been appointed by the Mexican government to be part of the Advisory Committee on Private Commercial Disputes of the USMCA and is vice president of the Arbitration and ADR Commission of the International Chamber of Commerce Mexico (ICC Mexico) and of the Instituto Mexicano del Arbitraje (IMA). She is also part of the World Commission on Arbitration of the ICC, part of the ICDR International Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators, and chair of its Translation Committee. She teaches ADR in the LL.M. Program in Private Law of the School of Law of the Universidad Anáhuac México and arbitration in the LL.M. Program in Procedural Law of the Escuela Libre de Derecho. She co authored the book Ley Mexicana de Arbitraje en Materia Comercial and is a regular speaker on arbitration and dispute resolution at various seminars and specialized meetings both in Mexico and abroad. 

Ms. Ortega is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. For several years now, she has been recognized in Chambers Latin America Guide, Chambers Global and WWL Mexico: Arbitration.


Ulyana Bardyn

Ulyana Bardyn represents clients in complex cross-border disputes, including international commercial arbitrations, investor-state disputes and business litigation matters. 

Ulyana is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), and she sits as an arbitrator. She has been selected to the roster of arbitrators maintained by the Ukrainian Arbitration Association. 

Prior to joining Eversheds Sutherland, Ulyana worked with a major global law firm where she represented clients in international arbitration and litigation matters, and, prior to that, with the Secretariat of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, where she oversaw hundreds of commercial arbitration matters.

Ulyana is Chair of the International Law Committee at the New York City Bar Association and serves on the CPR Institute’s Steering Committee of Young Attorneys in Dispute Resolution (CPR Y-ADR). She teaches a class on advocacy in investment arbitration at Brooklyn Law School and a class on international commercial arbitration at the Arbitration School of the Ukrainian Arbitration Association held annually in Kyiv, Ukraine. Ulyana frequently speaks and writes on topics relating to commercial and investor-state arbitration.

Gabriela Cosío

Gabriela Cosío Patiño is a senior associate in the Litigation and Arbitration practice at Garrigues.


She has acted as party representative in international commercial arbitrations governed by the main institutional rules and before the most important arbitration courts, such as the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the International Center for Dispute Resolution/American Arbitration Association (ICDR/AAA).


Gabriela is a Mexican delegate to the ICC World Arbitration Commission and Vice-Chair of the ICC Mexico Committee on Dispute Resolution in Infrastructure Works.


Her experience includes: (i) drafting, negotiating and analyzing defaults under turnkey engineering, procurement and construction contracts for macro projects and power plants, (ii) analyzing defaults and handling disputes arising from public works contracts financed with PEMEX and CFE and (ii) assisting international companies in their participation in public tenders, mainly in relation to the road and hospital construction industries in Public Private Partnership schemes.

Francesco Mazzota

Francesco G. Mazzotta, is Dottore in Giurisprudenza  for the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (Napoli, Italy). He also holds a J.D. and LL.M. from University of Pittsburgh, U.S.A. He is admitted to practice as Attorney at Law in the State of New York. He is currently a Chief Judicial Clerk at the Superior Court of Pennsylvania.

David Tebel 

David Tebel is co-founder and partner of the international dispute resolution boutique rothorn legal, based in Frankfurt, Germany. His practice focuses on industrial product liability cases, large-scale infrastructure projects and corporate disputes. His clients include leading industrials and technology companies, especially from the energy, automotive and oil & gas sectors. David has acted as counsel and arbitrator in proceedings governed by DIS, ICC, SCC, and ICSID rules as well as in ad hoc proceedings.


Prior to co-founding rothorn legal, David was a member of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s International Arbitration Group in Frankfurt and Singapore. At Freshfields, David was part of the innovation think-tank Freshfields Lab and interfaced between legal operations and the practice group dispute resolution.


Who’s Who Legal lists David as Future Leader in Arbitration. He is a member of the VIAC Legal Tech Think Tank and served as a rapporteur to the CISG Advisory Council. He regularly publishes and speaks on topical issues of arbitration and international sales law.


Lisa Spagnolo

Associate Professor Lisa Spagnolo is a member of faculty at Macquarie Law School in Sydney. She was educated at Deakin University (BCom [Dean’s List, Bowater Prize] and LLB [Supreme Court Prize & Supreme Court Exhibition Prize] and Monash University (PhD [Mollie Holman Medalist]). Previously a practitioner at Minter Ellison, and the Faculty of Law at Monash University, she specializes in domestic and comparative contract law, uniform commercial law instruments, choice of law, Islamic finance, geographical indications, property law and advocacy. Her research often takes an interdisciplinary approach, ranging from impacts of socio-political trends in development of law, law and economics, behavioural economics and statistical analysis, to utilizing historical, scientific and technical material to shed light on the impacts of law in the real world, and to suggest new interpretations of law. 

Lisa has published with Kluwer, Cambridge University Press, Federation Press, Beck/Hart/Nomos and Elgar, with many works cited by judges and government reports including reports by the England and Wales Law Commission, Hong Kong Department of Justice and Australian Attorney-General’s Department. She was expert advisor to the New York State Bar Association, Rapporteur for CISG Advisory Council Opinion No 16, is a founder and Fellow of the UN Coordination Committee of Australia, has consulted for law firms and UNCITRAL, and is currently a chief investigator on an ARC Linkage Grant and CLOUT National Correspondent for Australia.

Sophia Yang

Sophia Yang is originally from China. She studied law at the law school of Wuhan University (Wuhan, China) and successfully completed her PhD from Basel University, Switzerland, as part of the Global Sales Law Project, supervised by Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schwenzer, LL.M.

Sophia started her career as Deputy Counsel at Singapore International Arbitration Centre and thereafter at the Hong Kong office of ICC Court of Arbitration. Afterwards, she moved to Germany and worked at the Dusseldorf office of the international law firm Bird & Bird, mainly advising Chinese companies investing in Europe and dispute resolution.

Since 2017, Sophia joined the Chinese listed company Wuhan DDMC Culture & Sports Co., Ltd to be responsible for their business in Spain. She has been involved in players’ representation business, acquisition of sports media rights, and management of the football club. Since 2020, she became the board member of  Granada Club de Fútbol and was appointed as the President in 2022. 

Sophia is experienced in business negotiations between Chinese and European companies in relation to commercial exploitation of sports rights as well as local execution of the related projects.

Luísa Quintão

Luísa Quintão is an Associate Lawyer in the Arbitration & Mediation department of Justen, Pereira, Oliveira & Talamini Advogados in São Paulo, where she focuses her practice on infrastructure contracts and State-related disputes.

Luísa is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and serves as an Ambassador for the legal-tech platform Arbitrator Intelligence (AI) in Brazil. She is a member of the Management Committee of the Centre for Arbitration and Mediation of the Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce’s (CAM-CCBC) under-45 Committee (NewGen CAM-CCBC). She is also a member of the Coordination team of the Brazilian Arbitration Committee’s (CBAr) Study Group on State-related arbitration. Luísa is also a Lecturer at Ibmec (LL.M. in Commercial Arbitration) and a Visiting Lecturer at PUC-SP (Specialization in Arbitration); at both institutions, she teaches the course “Arbitration and State entities”.  In collaboration with Cesar Pereira, Luísa coordinates and hosts the series “Lex Arbitri: La Ley Local” on Arbitration Channel.

Luísa holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law and a Master’s degree in Law and International Economic Relations from the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo (PUC-SP). She also holds an LL.M. from Duke University. She is a former Vis Mootie (2014/2015) and current Vis Coach (PUC-SP).

Giulia Vallar

Giulia Vallar is a Lawyer in the Litigation & Regulatory department of DLA Piper, based in the Milan office. She has an extensive experience in civil and commercial litigation and arbitration, both domestic and international. In her professional work, she takes advantage of her deep knowledge of public as well as private and procedural international law, as she has been research fellow and assistant professor of International Law at the University of Milan. Giulia studied at the University of Milan (J.D., summa cum laude, 2010 and Ph.D. 2013), at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law (exchange student, 2010), at NYU School of Law (LL.M., 2017) at the Hague Academy of International Law (summer courses of private international law, 2011 and 2015, and Center of studies and research, 2021) and at the Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Privatrecht in Hamburg (visiting fellow, 2012 and 2016).

She regularly speaks at international conferences on international law and arbitration issues and she is the author of numerous scientific publications, including a book, on these same topics. She is a member of the Italian Society of International Law and of the European Association of Private International Law. 

Giulia has also been recognized among Who’s Who Legal – Arbitration Future Leaders 2024.

Joshua Karton

Joshua Karton is a Canadian academic and independent arbitrator, focusing on commercial and investor-state arbitration, international and comparative contract law, and transnational legal theory. He is an Associate Professor in the Queen’s University Faculty of Law, where he was until recently Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research. He has written or edited four books and dozens of articles and book chapters in his areas of interest. He holds a BA in International Relations and Humanities from Yale, a JD from Columbia, and a PhD in Law from Cambridge.

Professor Karton is an elected member of the International Academy of Comparative Law, has served on the Executive Committee of the American Society of Comparative Law, and is a Vice Chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration’s Academic Committee. He co-founded and continues to be the Managing Editor of the Canadian Journal of Commercial Arbitration, is a Book Review Editor of the American Journal of Comparative Law, and is a General Editor of Kluwer Arbitration Practical Insights.

Aside from his academic activities, Professor Karton is active as an arbitrator and consultant in commercial disputes, and has been designated a “Qualified Arbitrator” by the ADR Institute of Canada. Before commencing his academic career, he practiced in litigation and arbitration at Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in New York and Hong Kong. He is a native English speaker and proficient in Mandarin Chinese and French.

Marcos Peña Rodríguez

Marcos Peña is a founding partner of the firm, where he leads the Arbitration and Economic Regulation departments. In his professional practice, Mr. Peña specializes in alternative dispute and litigation resolution, international arbitration, as well as economic regulation, including telecommunications and energy.

Marcos is recognized locally and internationally for his participation in domestic and international arbitrations in matters such as concessions, construction, technology and distribution, and in investment disputes. In addition, his involvement in legislative and regulatory matters has made him part of the main processes related to the adoption of norms corresponding to regulated markets in the Dominican Republic. He has led or participated in complex financing and acquisitions particularly in the energy sector.

Marcos holds a law degree, cum laude, from Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University (UNPHU) and a Master of Laws (LLM) from King’s College (University of London) Chevening Scholar.

Orlando Cabrera

Mr. Orlando Cabrera studied law in Canada, Mexico, and the United States of America, and is fluent in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Mr. Orlando Cabrera advices governments and corporate investors in international dispute resolution across borders and languages.

 

With more than 10 years of experience, Mr. Orlando Cabrera draws on his deep understanding of complex domestic and international disputes to effectively represent clients in ICSID, ICC, ICDR, LCIA, UNCITRAL, CANACO and Arbitration Center of Mexico (CAM) arbitrations in mining, energy, telecommunications, finance, construction, transport, national security, real estate assets, and government contracting. He frequently writes, speaks, and organizes events on international arbitration.

 

Orlando is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) and former Board Secretary of CIArb's North American Branch (NAB), a listed arbitrator by the Tashkent International Arbitration Centre (TIAC), the Arbitration Center of the Lima Chamber of Commerce, the International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration, and the Panama Conciliation and Arbitration Centre, ICC Committee Member on the Proposal of Arbitrators, and an associate to the Madrid Court of Arbitration. Before, he served as Young ICCA Events Coordinator. Orlando teaches investment arbitration at Universisdad Iberoamericana.

 

Prior to joining the Hogan Lovells Mexico City office, Orlando started in the international arbitration practice of the firm's Miami office. He divides his time between these two offices. Orlando also previously served as a legal intern in the New York State Supreme Court.

Dr. Edgardo Muñoz (Conference Coordinator)

Edgardo Muñoz is a leading voice in the field of international business law as member of Universidad Panamericana's law faculty in Guadalajara, Mexico, from where he frequently contributes in specialized publications and discussion forums.

Besides his academic commitments, he practices in the area of international contracting and arbitration. He sits as arbitrator in international forums and represents clients in commercial and sport proceedings.

He is a Member of the Appeal Tribunal of the International Gymnastics Federation, Member of the CISG Advisory Council and Correspondent of UNIDROIT in Mexico. He is addmitted to practice law in California, United States and Mexico.

Edgardo Muñoz received his Bachelor of Laws from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico, and Master degrees from University of Liverpool in the U.K. and University of California in Berkley. He also holds a Doctoral degree from University of Basel in Switzerland.
