In order to start with your processes, it is necessary that you have physically received your original welcome Letter.

We recommend that you start your processes at least three months prior your arrival.

* If you are coming for less than 180 days (6 months), you DO NOT  need to carry out any immigration processes that are indicated in this guide.

Student Visa Requirements

In Mexico, students are allowed to enter the country freely for  up to 180 days without having a student visa. If your country is not on the list, you may need a visa to enter the country no matter how long you will stay. 

For more than 180 days, UP provides the letter for visa approval. Students should apply through the nearest Mexican consulate as soon as they have received their letter of acceptance as the visa process may take several weeks.

1- Is it necessary to process the student visa even if my country does not require any visa to enter Mexico?

Yes, because your condition of stay in Mexico would be a tourist and your condition of stay in Mexico must be a Temporary Student Resident.

2- Can I process the visa in México ?  

No, you can process it at any embassy or consulate outside of Mexico.

3-  Can I process my student visa in a different country  than my nationality? 

Yes, but you must present a document proving your legal stay in that country.

4-  What if I am underage (-18)?

You must be accompanied by your parents or legal guardian to all your procedures or, that your parents assign to a legal representative through a power of attorney notarized in your country and in Mexico.

5. If I already have an American visa or tourist visa, is it necessary to complete the student visa process?

Yes, because with the American visa your stay in Mexico would be a tourist and your Condition of stay in Mexico must be a temporary student resident.

6- Do I have to go to Mexico City to complete the process of Condition of stay - Temporary student resident?

No, the National Institute of Migration is based in the city of Aguascalientes, Guadalajara and Mexico City.

7- Can I leave Mexico and return during my study stay as many times as I want?

Yes. Upon entering again, show your Temporary Student Resident Card.

8- What happens if I lose or partially destroy my FMM or Temporary Student Resident Card?

You must request a replacement before the INM. You will have to bring your passport and preferably, a copy of the lost document, or the original destroyed. In case of theft or loss, you will have to go to the Public Ministry to draw up a record, before going to the INM.

Before you go to the corresponding INM delegation, you must enter the INM page http://www.inm.gob.mx/ and electronically fill out the MIGRATORY FORM FOR STAY PROCESSES.

9- Should I always carry the original of my Temporary Student Resident Card?

Yes. This document certifies your regular stay in the country. For its preservation, we recommend that you carry your card in a temporary non-adherent card. If at any time they ask for an official identification, you must also present your passport.
