Family Photographs: Memories and Histories

Sookbasseea Nundlall Peerthum,nwife of Seesurrun Peerthum, and daughter-in-law of Immigrant Peerthum and grand daughter of Immigrant Nundloll and Bhoyrubee, standing to the right of Pandit Nundlall at his residence in La Caverne, Vacoas in 1950. She was a widow, literate, a small property owner, and voted in the general elections of August 1948. She, her brother, and siblings, the grand children of indentured immigrants, helped to establish the Arya Samaj Movement in Riviere du Rempart, Lallmatie, and Vacoas.

Chanardath Peerthum, my grandfather and the grandson of Immigrant Peerthum and great Grandson of Immigrants Lolytah and Ramdhun, got married to Harbanseea Rasspasingh, the grand daughter of Immigrants Auchoybur and Nundoo in 1939 at Grand Gaube. They were photographed during the same year in a photo studio in Port Louis. Chanardath was an ox cart owner and driver, small landowner, sirdar, and metayer.
