M. I. Kathrada aged 18 years left India for Mauritius on the Vessel “Uganda” and arrived on 17 April 1911.

Some years later, he moved to Port Louis. He started to work at Farquhar Street and lived on the corner of Bourbon and Remy Ollier Streets.

In the 1950s, he moved to 29, Royal Road, Port Louis.

In 1965, the family members of Late Hajee M. I. Kathrada made a donation for the construction of a girls college called the “Muslim Girls College” at Eugene Laurent,Dauphine & Mgr Gonin Streets, Port Louis.

On 16 April 1971, M. I. Kathrada & Co. invested in the textile sector by opening “The Mauritius Thread Works”.

In 1985, Ahmad M. Kathrada (eldest son of M. I. Kathrada) was awarded the “Commander of the British Empire” for his devotion to trade and business.
