Eleftheria Hatzimichael, MD, PhD is a Haematologist, with a strong background and research activities in epigenetics and translational research. and currently an Associate Professor of Haematology in the Faculty of Medicine, School of Health Sciences, University of Ioannina, Greece. She graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Ioannina in 1998 and was trained in Haematology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, Barts and the London Trust, London, UK and the Department of Haematology, University Hospital of Ioannina, Ioannina, Greece. For her achievements, she was awarded a prestigious early-career one-year fellowship from the Hellenic Society of Haematology Foundation to work with Dr Isidore Rigoutsos as a Visiting Scientist at the Computational Medicine Centre, Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, US, in the field of the non-coding human genome by computational and experimental approaches (Jan 2011-Jan 2012), where she continues to be a Visiting Scientist. She has also received the prestigious Clinical Research Training in Haematology award for 2016-2017 from the European Haematology Association, a 9-month unique training and mentoring experience focused on clinical research in Europe with a global scope.
She is an Associate Editor of Oncogene, and a member of the Editorial Board of Diseases (section Oncology), an Associate Editor in Frontiers in Medicine (section Hematology), and a member of the Associate Editorial Board of the American Journal of Blood Research. She is also a member of the Hellenic Society of Haematology, the Greek Myeloma Study Group (GMSG), the Hellenic MDS Group, the American Society of Hematology, the European Cancer Research Association, and the European Haematology Association, and a founding member of the Interdisciplinary Society for Research in Hematology.
She is the PI in 50 Phase I-IV clinical trials and has served as a sub-investigator in more than 25 Phase I-III clinical trials.
She serves as the Special Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Society of Hematology 2025-2026 (member 2023-2024) and the Secretary of the Steering Committee of the Scientific Department of Myelodysplastic Syndromes and Marrow Failure of the Hellenic Society of Hematology, 2022-2023, 2024-2025.
She is the Chair of the Scientific Committee for Education at the University General Hospital of Ioannina and a member of the Education Committee of the Hellenic Society of Hematology.

I take part in the full on-call rota and run a dedicated weekly haematology clinic for new and follow-up patients.
