OT-Based HIT! A comprehensive guide to stroke rehabilitation
There are 10 principles of neuroplasticity that can guide a therapist through decision-making in stroke rehabilitation.
1) Use it or lose it
2) Use it and improve it
3) Specificity
4) Repetition matters
5) Intensity matters
6) Time matters
7) Salience matters
8) Age matters
9) Transference or Generalization
10) Interference
This program aims to incorporate the principles of neuroplasticity within OT interventions to enhance positive therapeutic outcomes. It should be noted that incorporating neuroplastic principles does not guarantee success with remediation. However, they can help increase the accuracy of interventions. All of these principles are important, but four principles have been shown to be essential in rehab, including specificity, repetition, intensity, and salience.
