Education
August 2019 - December 2023
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
BM in Music Education- Instrumental
From 2019-2023 I was focused in all aspects of the music community such as: strings, brass, voice, woodwinds, jazz, and general pedagogy. Aside from the instrumental part of the degree, I found myself really loving my music theory and music history classes because I am a pretty curious person so that part just makes me more ambitious about studying music. Especially through the COVID season, I found more technological resources to spice up the classroom and more ways for students to be involved in the music community.
December 2021 - December 2023
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
Minor in History
I chose this minor due to research purposes in general music. I was and still am interested in pulling out scores from different countries and cultures in order for students to play music around the world to share to the community (not only from JW Pepper). I can showcase the lost history of composers and musicians that are not really recognized in the classroom. I wanted to also study the philosophy of a musicians' mind and why we are so hard on ourselves when something is not up to our liking. This will remind me to constantly be there for my students day by day no matter what goes on in the classroom.
October 2023- December 2023
Legacy High School
Student Teacher
During this time, I was in charge of getting music prepared, helping out the students with the music, and making sure they are understanding prime objectives such as dynamics, articulation, music theory, slurs, and more instrument pedagogy. The experience made me realize how important the other music classes are such as music appreciation and music history are as most programs are still developing. This experience also helped me with the day of the life of marching and jazz band.
August 2023 - October 2023
Ullom Elementary School
Student Teacher
During this part of my student teaching experience, I learned a bunch of kagan structures, classroom management, and how to involve general music kids in discourse in the classroom. I also learned how important student discourse and transitions are in the classroom as elementary students are easily distracted on some days. I primarily assessed the students on mallet technique, matching pitch, and keeping a steady beat.
April 2022- May 2022
Canerelli Middle School
French Horn Aide
During this short time, I was still in my degree program and got invited to help the horn players at Canerelli Middle School for the upcoming concert. This time was only with the horn players so I got more time to focus on how people were playing individually.
September 2021- December 2021
Scherkenbach Elementary School
In this practicum experience, I have learned the importance on how to teach elementary school kids. The main things I got out of this experience were the importance of call and response learning, formative and summative assessment, and how the elementary classroom functions in the 50 minutes we have the students.
September 2018- September 2020
Lifetime Athletic Club
Kids Team Member
In my teenage years, I was working in a gym full of kids who went to classes such as gymnastics, music, ballet, french, karate, and much more. Throughout this experience, I have learned that kids like attention and can be very opinionated. I have also learned that I am the teacher and that I should be deciding on stuff for my students, not the opposite way around.
I am a creative collaborator for the XPropelr project, also supported by the International Justice Mission, a non-governmental organization in Washington D.C. In this project, I play with musicians all over the world who are fundraising and advocating against modern day slavery.
(ex: forced child marriages).
I was an intern working with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. During this time, I was in charge of posting social media content for upcoming concerts and educational events as well as curating an interactive VR exhibit on Artsteps talking about Andean Music and Instrumentation.
During college, I have minored in history and in one of my classes, I had the opportunity to do a 33 page historiography on my major and see how music education practices have changed from the 1920s to the 2000s. This gave me the opportunity to reflect on music education scholars and musicologists' points of view on the topic of teaching kids music. I have found that most successful music education practices come from other continents such as Asia, Europe, and South America which needs to be talked about more. The Suzuki Method, for example, found by Shinichi Suzuki, set realistic expectations towards young students saying that nobody is born with musical talent. They must be musically trained in order to develop their potential. This slideshow is just my reflection of the historiography.
