Many team sports have already been pushed back to January 1st, or the season has already been cancelled all together. Even the conference that all UNLV Athletics are in(Mountain West), says they will not play during the Fall Semester.
Therefore, it is important for athletes to say healthy during this absence in participation. This includes both mentally and physically. Athletes can have a lot of negative mental repercussions from not being able to play the sport they enjoy. They can also experience a lot of muscular atrophy and detraining effects from not being able to compete or have the resources they usually have available to them (i.e. gyms, trainers, nutrition advice, recovery assistance, etc...) (Jukic et. al)
It is difficult to mimic the training loads and volumes in the absence of these seasons and in the absence of the ability to train in a normal manner. However, there are some things we can include into our regimens that will help to keep us healthy and as fit as possible.
Use this break as an opportunity to reset you mind and your body
Apply proper preventative measures to reduce transmission of COVID-19
Ensure quality nutrition and reduce needless snacking and consumption of "junk" food
Follow a specific strength and conditioning regimen just as you would if you were in season and make sure its specific to your sport (aerobic or anaerobic)
HIIT workouts and workouts that include various Tabata's are great workouts when you have little to no equipment
Don't underestimate bodyweight exercises and their progressions
Plyometrics are another extremely beneficial addition to your regimen at home
Including mobility into your regimen is vital
working on recovery is very important whether that means rolling out, stretching, self myofascial release, use of heat on muscles, meditation, and so on
Lastly, there is not usually a great amount of time to recover from injuries. Therefore, for athletes that have lingering injuries, or ailments they have not addressed, this is a wonderful time to truly recover and take care of your body. Find solace in the idea that you have time to fix internal issues.
