Upper Division | Undergraduate
History of correctional practices in the United States. Focus on policy and practice in jails, prisons, probation, and parole. Students engage in two structured activities that demonstrate ambiguity of appropriate punishment and the difficulty of strong reform-oriented policy.
Lower Division | Undergraduate
An introduction to and overview of our correctional systems. Focus on definition, operation, and broad controversies. Students engage in written assessments of news relevant to corrections in the United States.
Graduate | M.A. & Ph.D.
A review of major criminological theories, tests of these theories, and development of criminological theory over time. Students engage in written assignments that focus on core propositions of each theory, their historical context and development, and strength of theories in predicting offending and desistance.

Dissertation Chair
Dr. Faria graduated with her Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice in Spring of 2026. Dr. Faria's work focuses on the intersection of juvenile justice contact and child welfare contact. Her dissertation highlights this dually-involved population in Clark County, Nevada.
Dr. Faria is currently on the job market seeking academic positions where she can continue to teach and develop her research agenda.
Dissertation Chair
Dr. DeVore graduated with her Ph.D. in Criminology & Criminal Justice in Spring of 2026. Dr. DeVore's work focuses on officer and civilian wellness during interactions, as well as officer burnout in community corrections. Her dissertation highlights the unique domains of organizational practices that promote or harm officer burnout.
Dr. DeVore is currently on the job market seeking applied work in industry where she can continue to contribute to research on community outcomes for officers and civilians.
