This project is a collaboration between the Nevada Department of Education and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. E-STAR's mission is to provide short and engaging science trainings for adults and children. Each short 30-minute training includes information about science models and ways to reduce anxiety, within the context of the current and potential future global pandemic.
If interested, the abstract to the research study is at the bottom of this page.

Academic abstract: Currently, the United States faces an unprecedented time around biological and social constraints. CDC recommended behaviors, such as social distancing and self-quarantine, hinder access to resources in both educational and clinical settings. By supporting adults (e.g., teachers, counselors, parents, caregivers) and children to engage with the science around COVID-19 through the use of scientific models while mitigating their anxiety, we hope to address needs in both science literacy and mental health. This program has three main objectives: (1) to support adults and children to develop an aspect of scientific literacy through age-appropriate modeling of phenomena (COVID-19), (2) Support individuals to learn and use anxiety-reducing strategies while engaging in complex and difficult topics, and (3) to create and disseminate evidence-based science and mental health resources through virtual platforms to populations in need (e.g. English Learners). This project researches the intersection between science literacy and mental health.
