In my block classes, I meet our state standards by integrating language arts standards into our history content. And it is all done in Spanish. Not sure what that means? Here's an example: when teaching about Ancient Egypt in history, I might have students read a Spanish article about the different social levels in Ancient Egypt and then write a diary entry in Spanish from the perspective of an assigned social level. The goal is for students to read and write daily in both History and Spanish Language Arts. This year for SLA, we will be reading the following novels: Los sobrevivientes, the story of the 1972 plane crash in the Andes; Esperanza renace, a story about a young girl who must adapt to a new life as a migrant worker in the U.S. during the Great Depression; and, if time allows, Percy Jackson y el ladrón del rayo, a fantasy novel that introduces Greek mythical characters and follows the main character on a dangerous quest.
Students in dual language will receive their English instruction during math/science blocks and their English Language Arts rotation.
