Busy Bugs

Welcome to Unity School District's Prekindergarten Busy Bug Program!!

Unity School is a Prekindergarten - 12th grade school located in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. We currently have five full-day, everyday Pre-k classrooms with 16-17 children in each classroom.

Our Pre-kindergarten curriculum focuses on child development, with an emphasis on social, emotional and physical growth. In addition, our Prekindergarten teachers are trained in the S.M.A.R.T. (Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) Program and C.S.E.F. E.L. (Center on the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning).

The S.M.A.R.T. Curriculum is a multi-sensory approach to learning, designed to develop and enhance readiness skills students need to succeed in school. The curriculum consists of activities for developing and/or enhancing student's large and fine muscle skills, visual perception and eye-hand coordination, which are all necessary tools for learning to read and academic success.

The Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL) is focused on promoting the social emotional development and school readiness of young children birth to age 5. CSEFEL is a national resource center funded by the Office of Head Start and Child Care Bureau for disseminating research and evidence-based practices to early childhood programs across the country.

Play is also a very important part of our busy day and it is how children learn in early childhood. Research shows play in an early learning classroom offers children a chance to increase skills such as problem solving, creative thinking, planning, organizing and language development. Play helps enhance development of cooperation, sharing, taking turns, and caring about others.

During our full day at school children have many opportunities to play and can choose from a variety of activities during choice time. Some of the centers in our classroom include:

Block Area

Sensory Table

Science and Exploration

Dramatic Play Area

Art Table and Easel

Math Manipulatives and Games

Fine Motor

Writing/ABC

During free choice time, teachers are actively engaged with children and helping to model skills such as sharing, taking turns, playing cooperatively and problem solving.

We have an amazing program filled with opportunities for children and families. In addition to our daily program, we also have several special events during the school year where we invite families to attend. Some of our special events include: Grandparent breakfast, Family Feast, Dads and Donuts and Moms and Muffins. In order to assure opportunities for all parents to be involved, we also host evening events. These events include a Hawaiian Luau and Popcorn and Pajama Event.
