Center Time

Classroom Interest Areas

Our classroom offers several different centers/interest areas for our children to explore and have hands-on learning daily. The children independently choose their centers, materials, and whom they want to work with. Sometimes, they choose to work independently. The teacher's role is to support student learning, ask open-ended questions, make suggestions, and help to expand thinking and problem-solving skills.


  • Writing - students develop the understanding that print is written speech, focus on letter, shape, and number formation, labeling, vocabulary/language skills, and experiments with different writing materials.
  • Music/Movement - students experiment with various musical instruments, dance, listen to different types of music, expands vocabulary and language skills, strengthens phonological awareness, and interacts with others.


Art/Art Easel

Students engage in creative expressions, build self-confidence, develop fine motor and visual skills, increases vocabulary/language skills, number concepts, and experiment with different tools and materials.

Math/Manipulative

Students increase their fine motor skills, enhance eye-hand coordination, recognize and create patterns, classify and sort objects, increase language/vocabulary skills, and develop number and letter concepts.



Dramatic Play



Students engage in creative and imaginative play, pretend and act out familiar everyday life experiences, take on various career and culture roles, increase their understanding of the world and they attain skills to help them throughout their lives, increase in vocabulary skills, and number concepts.

Fine Motor / Playdough

Students increase their fine motor skills, enhance eye-hand coordination, recognize and create patterns, classify and sort objects, increase language/vocabulary skills, and develop number and letter concepts.


Students build and construct using different types of blocks, use fine and gross motor muscles, recognize number and measurement concepts, develop problem-solving and thinking skills, increase vocabulary skills, develop cooperation skills as they work with classmates, discover modes of transportation, various animals, and different groups of people (community helpers, different cultures/genders, etc.).

Block Center


Library/Listening

Students develop print awareness, listening skills, comprehension and interpretation of text, promotes phonological awareness, expands vocabulary/language skills, number concepts, and enhancement of storytelling skills.

iPads

Students develop a sense of technology, learn basic components of the computer, independently explore and manipulate objects on the screen, problem solve, investigate, observe, expand vocabulary skills, increase fine motor skills, and gain self-direction and independence.

Science/Sensory Table

Offers sensory experiences, promotes scientific explorations, students classify, sort, measure, problem-solve, develop number and letter concepts, and experiment with different materials and tools.

Light Table

Students develop skills in exploration, observation, description, making comparisons, classifying, sorting, problem-solving, vocabulary skills, and number concepts.
