Mr Hardman explains the challenge and how to get involved!

What is this challenge?

The circumference of the world is 24,901 miles. We are challenging all members of the Unity Academy community (students, staff, parents, governors) to join us in logging the number of miles you walk (or run) over the next 80 days as part of your daily exercise. You could take a walk to the local shop and back for an essential purchase logging half a mile or go for a 10-mile run as part of your exercise routine. Every mile (or part mile) you log goes towards our total.

There are over 1000 people who are part of our community (and that is just students and staff). 24901 miles may seem a lot but when divided by 1000 people and then divided by 80 days it is less than half a mile per day (in fact if everyone took part it would only require each person to walk the distance from the Unity Academy entrance to the roundabout at Devonshire Road and back again!).

If we complete the challenge, every person who takes part (and logs the miles they have walked/run) on the Google form on the school website will receive a commemorative medal. More importantly, everyone who takes part will benefit from supporting their own physical and mental well being by taking part in daily exercise.

Who can take part?

Anyone with a link to the Unity Academy Community can take part – students, staff, parents or Governors. To receive a medal you will need to have a link to a named student or staff member in school.

How do I take part?

Get out and start walking (or running) between the 1st February 2021 and 22nd April 2021. Keep a record of the miles you walk. There are some apps and websites to help with this on the next page. When you have completed, go to the Unity Academy website and click on the Around the World in 80 days logo to log your miles by filling in the form.

When does it start?

The challenge runs between Monday 1st February until Thursday 22nd April.

Where do I need to go to take part?

You can walk (or run) anywhere local to where you live. Government lockdown rules say that you can only exercise with one person who lives outside your household and should socially distance. You are also asked to stay local.

If a student chooses to meet up with a friend who attends Unity to walk (following Government guidelines) you can both record your miles separately and contribute.

Why should I take part?

Exercise is good for your metal and physical well-being. Lockdown 3 is much harder than the others, the weather is against us, it is cold, wet and goes dark earlier. By taking part you are part of a bigger challenge which supports you (and your child’s) well-being. We can do this together and support each other. We will post regularly on the website to show where we are collectively in the world so you can share this at home. The commemorative medal that you will receive for taking part (and logging miles) will help you share your contribution with others.

How do I log and record my miles?

You can log your miles using this form or the link at the top of this page. The 'health' app on an iPhone or 'Google Fit' tracks your miles.

You could also use an app called Strava which will record your miles. This is a free app, there is no need to purchase the premium features.
