What happens to workers’ representation when established unions see their central role in giving voice to workers diminish? This Special Issue takes up this pressing question by examining workers’ representation confronting established trade unions and the new forms of organizing emerging in its wake. In addressing this question, the Special Issue advances the integration of industrial relations and social movement studies by bridging the gap between two fields that have historically developed in relative isolation.

The contributions explore the transformations in workers’ representation by assessing both the structural conditions driving change and the strategies workers and both established and grassroots unions deploy in response to shifting socioeconomic and political contexts. First, the articles highlight the diversity of actors involved in worker representation —from established unions to grassroots initiatives and social movement organizations—and show how they are redefining the union and organizational field. Second, they address challenges that emerge both within unions and in their broader environments. They shed light on the role of the contextual dimensions—including economic and political opportunities and constraints, and the institutional frameworks in which unions operate—as well as on their organizational dynamics, such as inter-union relationships involving cooperation, coalition building, and competition. They also highlight the role of individual actors, from workers’ experiences to employers’ strategic actions, in shaping contemporary forms of representation. Third, the contributions examine these dynamics across diverse sectors—ranging from male-dominated industries such as logistics and shipbuilding to female-dominated sectors such as care work—and across multiple European contexts, including Southern Europe, the Nordic countries, the UK, and Eastern Europe, where traditional models of representation are being renegotiated.

Employment conditions for low-skilled workers are deteriorating across all European countries, leading to the emergence of grassroots unions alongside more established labour organisations. Despite the increasing union heterogeneity characterising corporativist Southern European countries in particular, inter-union relationships have never been emphasised in previous studies. Our article explores the evolving relational landscape of employee representation and its impact on effective advocacy for low-skilled workers. In conducting a multiple case study research design within the Italian logistics sector, we rely on the concepts of frames and power resources to understand inter-union relationships and their consequences for workers’ concerns. Our results show how grassroots unions and established unions are characterised by deep frame contestation in terms of ideational incompatibility. The studied grassroots union adopted radical frames emphasising labour–capital struggles, while established unions employed a more moderate ‘just balance’ approach, pursuing dialogue with firms. In line with this, the grassroots union made much stronger use of structural and associational power resources, while the established union used a wider variety of such resources. This dynamic fostered heightened competition and antagonism between the unions. However, our results also suggest that this antagonism inadvertently resulted in a positive division of labour that revealed a complementarity between different union framings in addressing workers’ concerns.

This article explores the impact of political reforms on labor protests, and on the unions and organizations supporting them. In doing so, we complement theories centered on economic factors and workplace dynamics as key dimensions influencing labor action with insights from contentious politics. We focus on labor protests in post-2008 Italy, a country deeply affected by the 2008 recession and the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to these crises, a series of reforms was implemented, significantly impacting workers’ rights, wages, job precarity, and overall working conditions. We examine how the passage of such reforms influenced labor mobilization and reshaped the union and organizational field. We use a dataset built through protest event analysis (PEA) covering 9,527 labor protests. We analyze levels of labor action over time, the unions and organizations involved from 2008 to 2022, with particular attention to variations during periods of reform implementation. The results show that labor protest spikes are closely aligned with the passage of reforms throughout the period. Furthermore, political reforms expand and transform the field of unions and organizations mobilizing workers, though the extent of involvement varies across groups. Throughout the post-2008 crisis, union federations have been the primary actors involved in collective actions. However, the political decisions implemented during the COVID-19 period mark a significant turning point, with both established and grassroots unions showing decreased participation, while professional organizations and non-worker categories experiencing a marked increase. Despite these shifts, our results illustrate that union federations remain resilient to change, maintaining their dominant position within the field throughout the entire period, while newer actors act at the periphery of labor action.

L’ articolo propone l’analisi aggregata delle rivendicazioni dei conflitti di lavoro espresse dai sindacati e dalle organizzazioni che rappresentano i lavoratori, singolarmente e in alleanze intra-sindacali, per comprendere se queste propongano l’elaborazione di una nuova cultura alternativa a quella neoliberista. Il contesto teorico recupera il concetto di enjeu di A. Touraine.

Empiricamente, l’analisi è condotta su un dataset originale costruito attraverso il metodo dell’analisi degli eventi di protesta (PEA), che include gli scioperi e le altre proteste, registrati in Italia dal 2008 al 2018. I risultati evidenziano che nel sistema delle relazioni industriali prevalgono le rivendicazioni economiche e una politica difensiva promossa dai sindacati confederali. Anche se in maniera marginale, rivendicazioni politiche, unitamente a quelle economiche, spingono i sindacati confederali e autonomi a collaborare, insieme ad attori

non tradizionali, nell’opposizione alle politiche governative nazionali. Tuttavia, la contestazione al neoliberismo rimane ai margini del conflitto industriale, promossa da sindacati autonomi e gruppi autorganizzati di lavoratori.

This article proposes an analysis of labour conflict claims expressed by workers and trade unions in Italy, individually and in intra-union alliances, to understand whether these propose the elaboration of a new alternative culture opposite to the neoliberal one. The theoretical framework recovers the concept of enjeu suggested by A. Touraine.

Empirically, the analysis is conducted on an original dataset constructed through the method of protest event analysis (PEA), which includes strikes and other protests, recorded in Italy from 2008 to 2018. The results show that economic claims and a defensive policy promoted by the confederal trade unions prevail in the Italian industrial relations system. Even if marginally, political claims, together with economic ones, push cooperation between confederal and autonomous trade unions, together with non-traditional actors, in the opposition to national government policies. However, political focused contestation to neo-liberalism remains at the margins of the industrial conflict, led by autonomous trade unions and self-organised groups of workers.

The article provides an overview of workers’ collective actions occurred in Italy, characterizing a new wave of contention between 2008 and 2018. It focuses on the development of strike activities. While the literature suggests an increase in general/political strikes and a decline of economic strikes, we argue that this distinction does not sufficiently account for the variety of strikes that has recently occurred. Our contribution aims to clarify the differences between three types of strikes: general political strike, general/large-scale economic strike and local economic strike. 

The empirical analysis is based on a new dataset on workers’ collective actions, including strikes, observed in Italy in the decade 2008-2018. The dataset was built using protest event analysis (PEA). Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) allows us to show that the three types of strikes differ along the actors promoting them, the workers’ occupations involved, the issues claimed, the scale of action and the target of the actions. 

Conclusions compare the characteristics of workers contention between 2008 and 2018 with the old cycle of protest and suggest to join economic and political explanations of strikes to account for the new types of strikes.

Abstract
ENG This article explores differences in labour conflicts in Italy and France by focusing on the characteristics of the most prominent structures of worker mobilization: trade unions. Despite several similarities between the French and Italian industrial relations systems, and despite the fact that trade union density in Italy is more than three times greater than it is in France, France is one of the few European countries in which the average strike volume increased after the Great Recession. Protests in France also peaked in the pre-crisis period, while Italy did not show any wave of contention. We contend that the nature and level of labour conflicts observed in the two countries in the last two decades depend on alliances between trade unions and other social groups and organizations sustaining worker mobilization, specifically, social movement organizations. In particular, we argue that labour conflicts are related to the characteristics of social movement unionism. Evidence from cases studies in France and Italy suggests that the role of trade unions and their alliances has been different in the two countries. Confederal trade unions in France have been able to engage in social movement unionism within broader coalitions involving other social categories and social movement organizations. In contrast, in Italy, these dynamics have mostly involved small rank-and-file unions and self-organized workers’ groups engaged in radical political unionism. This has resulted in different levels of mobilization associated with social movement unionism and radical political unionism, given the greater capacity of confederal trade unions in building nationally coordinated and sustained collective actions.
IT  Questo articolo esplora le differenze nei conflitti di lavoro in Italia e in Francia, concentrandosi sulle caratteristiche delle organizzazioni più importanti per la mobilitazione dei lavoratori: i sindacati. Nonostante le numerose analogie tra i sistemi di relazioni industriali francese e italiano, e nonostante il fatto che la densità sindacale in Italia sia più di tre volte superiore a quella francese, la Francia è uno dei pochi Paesi europei in cui il volume medio degli scioperi è aumentato dopo la recessione del 2008. In Francia le proteste avevano raggiunto un picco già durante il periodo precedente la crisi, mentre in Italia non si sono registrate ondate di protesta come in Grecia o Spagna, neanche dopo la crisi. L'articolo sostiene che la natura e il livello dei conflitti di lavoro osservati nei due Paesi negli ultimi due decenni dipendono dalle alleanze tra i sindacati e gli altri gruppi sociali e organizzazioni che sostengono la mobilitazione dei lavoratori, in particolare le organizzazioni dei movimenti sociali. In particolare, i conflitti del lavoro sono legati alle caratteristiche del cosiddetto social movement unionism, le alleanze tra confederali e organizzazioni di movimento sociale. I casi di studio in Francia e in Italia suggeriscono infatti che il ruolo dei sindacati e delle loro alleanze è stato diverso nei due Paesi. In Francia, i sindacati confederali sono stati in grado di impegnarsi in dinamiche di  social movement unionism all'interno di ampie coalizioni che hanno coinvolto varie categorie sociali e organizzazioni di movimento sociale. In Italia, al contrario, queste dinamiche hanno coinvolto soprattutto i piccoli sindacati di base e i gruppi di lavoratori auto-organizzati impegnati nel cosiddetto radical political unionism. Ciò ha comportato diversi livelli di mobilitazione nei due Paesi data la maggiore capacità dei sindacati confederali di costruire azioni collettive coordinate a livello nazionale.

Do Organizational Structures Matter for Protests in Non-Democratic African Countries?

ENG  The chapter re-examines the by-now well established notion regarding the positive effects of activists’ organizational structure and organizational engagement on protest mobilization, as applied to highly repressive settings, a topic which has received only scant attention in the literature. Strong repressive measures may imply the suppression of the opposition, and the overall destabilization of the organizational structure. In addition, authoritarian rulers often extend their influence by promoting associational agendas that directly serve their political mandates, reinforcing clientelistic political behavior, and promoting ideals that are not critical to the regime. In this context two specific mechanisms enableg organizations to operate in repressive contexts: first, the orientation of organizational activities toward apolitical issues; second the trasnationalization, the moderation, or the radicalization of political activities, which contribute to renovating the reper­toire of actions. The empirical study focuses on the effect of organizational structure and organizational engagement on protest mobilization in Nigeria, and Zimbabwe, two countries classified by international indexes as repressive and authoritarian regimes. Drawing in part on data from public opinion surveys (the Afrobarometer 2009), the chapter shows that despite severe levels and forms of repression in both countries, Nigeria has among the highest levels of individual engagement in organizations and in protest mobilization whereas Zimbabwe has among the lowest levels of engagement and a fragmented organizational structure. I suggest that a reversed- U relationship between repression and organizational structure may be at work, as these mechanisms are less likely to operate under high repression such as Zimbabwe where trade unions and their members have been systematically targeted by repressive measures. Assessment of the results in relation to the more recent wave of revolts throughout the Middle East and North Africa inform the concluding part of the chapter.
IT Il capitolo riesamina la relazione, ormai consolidata in letterarura, degli effetti della struttura organizzativa e del coinvolgimento degli attivisti in vari tipi di organizzazioni sulla protesta, analizzando tale relazione in contesti repressivi. Il capitolo discute varie implicazioni del lavoro in un contesto di repressione che un'organizzazione politica deve affrontare: le misure repressive possono infatti implicare la soppressione delle organizzazioni vicine all'opposizione e la destabilizzazione complessiva della struttura organizzativa. Inoltre, i governi autoritari spesso promuovono le organizzazioni che servono direttamente ai loro mandati politici, rafforzando il comportamento politico clientelare e promuovendo ideali non critici nei confronti del regime. In tale contesto, due meccanismi permettono alle organizzazioni di operare: in primo luogo, l'orientamento delle attività delle organizzazioni verso temi apolitici; in secondo luogo, la trasnazionalizzazione, la moderazione o la radicalizzazione delle attività politiche, che contribuiscono a rinnovare il repertorio di azioni. Lo studio empirico si concentra sulle proteste in Nigeria e Zimbabwe, due Paesi classificati dagli indici internazionali come regimi repressivi e autoritari. Attingendo ai dati dell' Afrobarometro (1999-2009), il capitolo mostra che, nonostante i livelli e le forme di repressione che caratterizzano entrambi i Paesi, la Nigeria mostri elevati livelli di coinvolgimento degli individui sia in vari tipi di organizzazione che nelle proteste. Al contrario, lo Zimbabwe mostra tra i più bassi livelli di coinvolgimento. Suggerisco una relazione a U rovesciata tra repressione e struttura organizzativa. Questo implica che i meccanismi citati non funzionano in condizioni di forte repressione come nello Zimbabwe, dove i sindacati e i loro membri sono stati sistematicamente presi di mira da misure repressive. Le conclusioni discutono i risultati in relazione alla più recente ondata di rivolte in Medio Oriente e Nord Africa.

Comparing engagement by migrants in domestic and in country-of-origin political activities across European cities

ENG  This article aims to investigate levels of migrants and second generations’ engagement in country-of-origin political activities and in domestic political activities. Using data from a population survey of individuals of migrant origin in ten European cities undertaken in 2004–2010, we examine both individual and contextual characteristics shaping engagement in one and in the other scope of action. Findings show that migrants and second generations tend to engage in an equal number of domestic and country-of-origin political activities. Engagement in country-of-origin political activities only is fully compatible with a trajectory of political integration in the countries of settlement, opposing the view that migrants may contribute to build or live in a “separate” society. Finally, the results show that contextual opportunities affect chances to engage in one or in the other scope of action. In particular, easy access to residence permits favours engagement in domestic political activities and discourages engagement in country-of-origin political activities. This suggests that migrants and second generations’ engagement in country-of-origin political activities may be a reaction to the limited opportunities of integration offered by the residence countries.
IT Questo articolo si propone di indagare il coinvolgimento degli immigrati e delle seconde generazioni nelle attività politiche dei loro Paese d'origine e dei Peasi di residenza. Utilizzando i dati di un'indagine condotta su individui di origine immigrata in dieci città europee (2004-2010), esaminiamo le caratteristiche degli individui e dei contesti che determinano l'impegno nell'uno e nell'altro ambito di azione. I risultati mostrano che gli immigrati e le seconde generazioni tendono a impegnarsi in un numero simile di attività politiche che riguardano il Paese di residenza e il Paese d'origine. L'impegno nelle attività politiche del Paese d'origine è quindi pienamente compatibile con una traiettoria di integrazione politica nei Paesi di residenza. Ciò contrasta con l'idea che i migranti possano contribuire a costruire o vivere in una società "separata" nei Paesi in cui risiedono. Infine, i risultati mostrano che le opportunità fornite dal contesto in cui gli immigrati vivono influenzano le possibilità di impegnarsi nell'uno o nell'altro ambito di azione. In particolare, la facilità di accesso ai permessi di soggiorno favorisce l'impegno nelle attività politiche nei Paesi di residenza e scoraggia l'impegno nelle attività politiche del Paese d'origine. Ciò suggerisce che il coinvolgimento degli immigrati e delle seconde generazioni nelle attività politiche del Paese d'origine può essere una reazione alle limitate opportunità di integrazione offerte dai Paesi di residenza.

ENG  This chapter focuses on how citizenship affects migrants’ participation in individual and collective political actions. It considers the institutionalized dimension of citizenship, that is, the set of legal norms, laws, policies, and ideas of the nation in the countries where migrants settle, what has been referred to as citizenship regime. It examines how the latter shapes constraints and opportunities of migrants’ political participation in individual activities such as voting and extra-electoral political activities such as displaying a badge, or boycotting certain products for political reasons. Additionally, the chapter examines how citizenship regimes affect collective actions which include political claims-making, such as protests or political activities undertaken by migrant groups and organizations. Finally, it illustrates the moderating effect of the citizenship regime on the impact that several other factors, particularly associations, have on political engagement by individual and collective actors.
IT Questo capitolo si concentra su come le norme relative all'acquisizione della cittadinanza dei vari Paesi europei influiscano sulla partecipazione degli immigrati in azioni politiche individuali e collettive. In particoalre, il capitolo prende in considerazione la dimensione istituzionalizzata della cittadinanza, ovvero l'insieme di norme giuridiche, leggi, politiche e idee della nazione nei Paesi in cui gli immigrati si stabiliscono, il cosiddetto regime di cittadinanza. Il capitolo esamina il modo in cui quest'ultimo modella i vincoli e le opportunità della partecipazione politica dei migranti sia in attività individuali - come il voto e le attività politiche extra-elettorali come l'esposizione di un distintivo o il boicottaggio - che in azioni collettive quali rivendicazioni politiche come le proteste o le attività politiche intraprese da gruppi e organizzazioni di migranti. Infine, il capitolo illustra l'effetto di moderazione del regime di cittadinanza sull'impatto che diversi altri fattori, in particolare le associazioni, hanno sull'impegno politico degli attori individuali e collettivi.

Gaps in protest activities between natives and individuals of migrant origin in Europe

Abstract
ENG This article explores gaps in protest engagement between natives and individuals of migrant origin in European cities. It examines migrant–native gaps and second generation–native gaps by associating them with different sources of inequalities: differential individual socio-economic status resources, differential attitudes, and differential characteristics related to migration; differential effects of such factors for natives and for individuals of migrant origin; and differential contexts offering varying opportunities of participation. The study uses cross-national micro-data from a population survey of immigrant-origin individuals and natives in 9 European cities undertaken in 2004–2008. The findings show that observed inequalities in protest participation involving migrants and second generations are largely based on different levels of education attained and of political interest. Some migration-related characteristics, like holding the citizenship of the host country and experienced discrimination, affect protest gaps as well. In addition, results support the claimed importance of the context where individuals of migrant origin settle, in particular, of the characteristics of the citizenship regime. Finally, our findings support a segmented assimilation hypothesis whereby different socio-economic modes of incorporation of ethnic groups in the host cities affect different trajectories of political incorporation.
IT Questo articolo esplora le disuguaglianze partecipative riguardanti le azioni di protesta tra nativi e individui di origine immigrata in varie città europee. In particoalre, il capitolo esamina i divari tra nativi e migranti e quelli tra nativi e seconde generazioni associandoli a diverse fonti di disuguaglianze: risorse socio-economiche individuali diverse, atteggiamenti diversi e caratteristiche diverse legate alle migrazioni; effetti diversi di tali fattori per i nativi e per gli individui di origine migrante; contesti diversi che offrono diverse opportunità di partecipazione. Lo studio utilizza microdati transnazionali provenienti da un'indagine condotta su individui di origine migratoria e nativi in 9 città europee nel periodo 2004-2008. I risultati mostrano che le disuguaglianze osservate nella partecipazione alle proteste che coinvolgono gli immigrati e le seconde generazioni sono in gran parte basate sui diversi livelli di istruzione raggiunti e sui diversi livelli di interesse politico. Anche alcune caratteristiche legate al processo migratorio, come il possesso della cittadinanza del Paese di residenza e la discriminazione subita, influiscono sui divari partecipativi. Inoltre, i risultati confermano l'importanza del contesto in cui gli individui di origine immigrata si stabiliscono, in particolare, delle caratteristiche del regime di cittadinanza. Ethnic and immigrant politics vs mainstream politics: the role of ethnic organizations in shaping the political participation of immigrant-origin individuals in Europe.

ENG  Previous scholarship has reported contradictory results regarding the impact of involvement by immigrant-origin individuals (IOIs) in ethnic organizations on political participation. In this article, we assess the effect of involvement in different types of organizations (ethnic, pan-immigrant and native) on participation in various types of political activities. We use cross-national micro-data from a population survey undertaken in 2004–2008 to IOIs in nine European cities. Our findings indicate that ethnic organizations perform an integrative function for IOIs in the political sphere, but they mainly affect participation linked to immigration-related issues concerning specific ethnic groups and IOIs. Moreover, most effects of involvement in ethnic organizations on the different types of political participation examined are similar in closed and in open political opportunity structures (POS). We only find evidence that involvement in ethnic organizations depresses conventional political action in open POS settings while it increases political action in closed POS settings.
IT Precedenti studi hanno riportato risultati contraddittori riguardo all'impatto del coinvolgimento di individui di origine immigrata in organizzazioni etniche sulla partecipazione politica. In questo articolo, valutiamo l'effetto del coinvolgimento in vari tipi di organizzazioni (etniche, pan-immigrate e autoctone) sulla partecipazione a vari tipi di attività politiche. Utilizziamo microdati transnazionali provenienti da un'indagine condotta nel 2004-2008 sugli individui di origine immigrata residenti in nove città europee. I nostri risultati indicano che le organizzazioni etniche svolgono una funzione integrativa per gli individui di origine immigrata nella sfera politica, ma influenzano principalmente la partecipazione legata a questioni legate all'immigrazione riguardanti specifici gruppi etnici e immigrati. Inoltre, la maggior parte degli effetti del coinvolgimento nelle organizzazioni etniche sui diversi tipi di partecipazione politica esaminati sono simili in contesti con  strutture di opportunità politica (POS) chiuse e aperte.

Networks and political engagement of migrant organisations in five European cities

Abstract
ENG  This article investigates networks and political actions by migrant organisations in five European cities. It examines how political opportunity structures moderate the impact of organisational networks on organisations' political contacts and protests using data from organisational surveys undertaken between 2005 and 2008 in Budapest, Lyon, Madrid, Milan and Zurich. Results suggest that the political context moderates the role that different types of networks have on mobilisation. It is found that migrant organisational networks may be sources compensating for the lack of contextual opportunities, thus fostering the use of protest by migrant organisations. However, migrant organisational networks can also favour the creation of political subcultures, marginalised from mainstream politics. Finally, migrant networks are likely to foster migrant organisations' political integration in multicultural contexts through conventional as well as non-conventional politics.
IT Questo articolo analizza le reti e le azioni politiche delle organizzazioni di migranti in cinque città europee. L'articolo esamina come il contesto (le strutture delle opportunità politiche) moderi l'impatto che le reti organizzative hanno sui contatti politici e sulle proteste delle organizzazioni, utilizzando i dati di indagini organizzative condotte tra il 2005 e il 2008 a Budapest, Lione, Madrid, Milano e Zurigo. I risultati suggeriscono che il contesto politico modera il ruolo che i diversi tipi di reti hanno sulla mobilitazione. È emerso che le reti organizzative di migranti possono essere fonti che compensano la mancanza di opportunità contestuali, favorendo così l'uso della protesta da parte delle organizzazioni di migranti. Tuttavia, le reti organizzative di migranti possono anche favorire la creazione di sottoculture politiche, emarginate dalla politica tradizionale. Infine, le reti di migranti favoriscono l'integrazione politica delle organizzazioni di migranti in contesti multiculturali attraverso politiche convenzionali e non.

The political transnationalism of Ecuadorians in Barcelona, Madrid and Milan: The role of individual resources, organizational engagement, and the mobilization context.

Abstract
ENG  In this article, we examine the transnational political engagement of Ecuadorians in three European cities – Barcelona, Madrid and Milan. Drawing on previous studies that emphasize the role of organizational and institutional resources for political mobilization (as well as those that take into consideration respondents’ resources and the migration process), we analyse the results of a survey conducted between 2006 and 2008 on approximately 300 Ecuadorian individuals in each of these three cities. We examine two different dimensions of Ecuadorian political transnationalism at the individual level, namely attitudinal and participatory. Contrary to previous findings, our results show that recently arrived Ecuadorians and those with less stable household conditions are more involved in transnational politics. Associational involvement shows multiple effects. Engagement in Ecuadorian associations fosters political interest in and information about Ecuador, whereas involvement in any organization promotes electoral transnational politics. The political context is only relevant when accounting for participation in Ecuadorian elections.
IT In questo articolo esaminiamo l'impegno politico transnazionale degli ecuadoriani in tre città europee - Barcellona, Madrid e Milano. Prendendo spunto da studi precedenti che enfatizzano il ruolo delle risorse organizzative e istituzionali per la mobilitazione politica (così come quelli che prendono in considerazione le risorse degli intervistati e il processo migratorio), analizziamo i risultati di un'indagine condotta tra il 2006 e il 2008 su circa 300 individui ecuadoriani in ciascuna di queste tre città. Esaminiamo due diverse dimensioni del transnazionalismo politico ecuadoriano a livello individuale, ovvero quella attitudinale e quella partecipativa. Contrariamente a quanto emerso in precedenza, i nostri risultati mostrano che gli ecuadoriani arrivati di recente e quelli con condizioni familiari meno stabili sono più coinvolti nella politica transnazionale. Il coinvolgimento associativo mostra effetti multipli. L'impegno nelle associazioni ecuadoriane favorisce l'interesse politico e l'informazione sull'Ecuador, mentre il coinvolgimento in qualsiasi organizzazione promuove la politica elettorale transnazionale. Il contesto politico è rilevante solo quando si tiene conto della partecipazione alle elezioni ecuadoriane.

Network resources and political engagement of migrant organizations in Milan.

Abstract
ENG  This article analyses the political engagement of immigrant organisations in Milan. Theoretically, I discuss three types of resource which may affect this engagement: institutional, group-related and network resources. By using data on 46 immigrant organisations, I examine the role of network resources and how they affect the contacts that immigrant organisations build with Italian political institutions. The study shows that networks among organisations increase the number of political contacts organisations build. However, not all links are significant. While links with autochthonous organisations are relevant, links with immigrant ones are not. Comparing my results with the literature developed in other contexts, I suggest that the political context may affect the type of organisational structure which develops and the network resources with which immigrant organisations are endowed. In contexts where ethnic differences are recognised, immigrant organisations seem to have enough resources to organise and act autonomously in the political sphere. In contrast, where social organisation around ethnicity is not encouraged, immigrant organisations’ possibilities for mobilisation seem to derive from resources mediated by autochthonous organisations which largely prevail in the field of immigration.
IT Questo articolo analizza il coinvolgimento politico delle organizzazioni di immigrati a Milano. Dal punto di vista teorico, discuto tre tipi di risorse che possono influenzare questo impegno: risorse istituzionali, di gruppo e di rete. Utilizzando i dati di 46 organizzazioni di immigrati, esamino il ruolo delle risorse di rete e il modo in cui esse influenzano i contatti che le organizzazioni stabiliscono con le istituzioni politiche italiane. Lo studio mostra che le reti tra organizzazioni aumentano il numero di contatti politici che le organizzazioni creano. Tuttavia, non tutti i legami sono significativi. Mentre i legami con le organizzazioni italiane sono rilevanti, quelli con le organizzazioni di immigrati non lo sono. Confrontando i miei risultati con la letteratura sviluppata in altri contesti, suggerisco che il contesto politico può influenzare il tipo di struttura organizzativa che si sviluppa e le risorse di rete di cui le organizzazioni immigrate sono dotate. Nei contesti in cui le differenze etniche sono riconosciute, le organizzazioni di immigrati sembrano avere risorse sufficienti per organizzarsi e agire autonomamente nella sfera politica. Al contrario, dove l'organizzazione sociale basata sul gruppo di appartenenza etnico non è incoraggiata, le possibilità di mobilitazione delle organizzazioni di immigrati sembrano derivare dalle risorse mediate dalle organizzazioni autoctone, che prevalgono ampiamente nel campo dell'immigrazione.

Together We Stand? The Evolution of Online Interactions by Southern European LGBTQIA* Organizations

Abstract
European LGBTQIA* organizations have often been perceived as isolated from other organizations. While investigations have suggested that social media platforms foster inter-organizational ties, their role in promoting or dampening within- and cross-field interactions is understudied. This article aims to fill this gap by examining the factors shaping within- and cross-field digital interactions established by LGBTQIA* organizations located in Milan and Madrid. It analyzes the networks resulting from LGBTQIA* organizations mentioning, sharing, and promoting events on Facebook between 2011 and 2020. Results show that Madrid- and Milan-based LGBTQIA* organizations increasingly engage in cross-field interactions on social media, becoming crucial bridging actors with organizations from other fields. They also suggest that political threats moderate the relationship between organizational identities and cross-field ties.

Il concetto di riot: tra la psicologia delle folle e le teorie dell’azione collettiva

Abstract
ENG In the last decade we have witnessed a return of the use of riot as a category to define several protest events. This has occurred among media and political representatives, and among academics as well despite Tilly's warning against the use of such category. This article aims to examine some events identified as riots, and to reinterpret them in light of mainstream theories of collective actions. It first treats narrations equating protests with riots and identifies several dimensions linking these interpretations to the collective behavior perspective. It then considers the same events by drawing on the literature on collective actions. By focusing on the spontaneity and organization of protests, the article illustrates some empirical evidence on the Arab Uprisings. The results show that the interpretation of protests as riots is hegemonic to the degree that it marginalizes conflict by accusing the most peripheral sectors of societies to adopt unmotivated violence. By emphasizing the danger associated to such violence and the necessity to limit it, these interpretations contribute to the creation of consent among the population, with the aim of keeping social order and control, and build the basis of élites' own legitimacy.
IT Nell'ultimo decennio abbiamo assistito a un ritorno dell'uso del concetto di riot come categoria per definire vari eventi di protesta. L'uso di tale concetto ha riguardato i media e i rappresentanti politici, ma anche alcuni accademici, nonostante Tilly, uno studioso tra i più importanti dei movimenti sociali, avesse messo in guardia contro l'uso di tale categoria. Questo articolo si propone di esaminare alcuni eventi identificati come riots e di reinterpretarli alla luce delle principali teorie delle azioni collettive. Dapprima, l'articolo tratta le narrazioni che equiparano le proteste ai riots e identifica diverse dimensioni che collegano queste interpretazioni alla prospettiva del comportamento collettivo. Successivamente, l'articolo considera gli stessi eventi attingendo alla letteratura sulle azioni collettive. Concentrandosi sulla spontaneità e sull'organizzazione delle proteste, l'articolo illustra alcune evidenze empiriche relative alle Arab Uprisings, le proteste osservate nei paesi del Nord Africa e del Medio Oriente a fine 2010 e nel 2011. I risultati mostrano che l'interpretazione delle proteste come riots è egemonica nella misura in cui marginalizza il conflitto accusando i settori più periferici delle società di adottare violenze immotivate durante le proteste. Enfatizzando il pericolo associato a tale violenza e la necessità di limitarla, queste interpretazioni contribuiscono alla creazione di consenso tra la popolazione, con l'obiettivo di mantenere l'ordine e il controllo sociale, e costruiscono la base della legittimità delle élite e dell'uso di forme di repressione per sedare le proteste.
