2028-29 theme: TBC | Suggestions welcome
This Design unit is not asking you to invent completely new products but is focused on using existing systems in imaginative and innovative ways.
We will build on basic digital design skills such as programming and robotics.
These will be combined with product design skills like modeling and rapid prototyping.
In this unit, you are asked to design a product that performs an everyday task automatically for a specific client and target audience.
This target audience is based on your own experience and the client can be you or someone similar from your family or peer group.
Statement
of inquiry:
"Improvement usually means doing something that we have never done before"
- Shigeo Shingo.
Creating prototypes and adapting existing products is how products develop
Creative thinking - Investigate new contexts and scenarios. Think critically and originally to propose and evaluate a variety of solutions or approaches.
Focus exploration:
Happiness and the good life
Success criteria:
Your project will be successful if;
Your product functions as intended or proves the concept is possible through your prototype.
You experiment with multiple iterations of designs relating to the central design problem
Initial inquiry:
What systems can be used to automate movement and processes?
How can a basic prototype be created?
How can digital and product design skills be connected?
Possible sources:
We are using Lego EV3 robotics kits as the base for our prototypes in this unit. EV3s might be familiar from previous design units in middle school. They are easy to program, and easy to build.
Before moving into the design development phase we will research the ev3s by building and testing their abilities. Use the videos and resources below to create your first robot.
You will need an iPad from the cart to begin programming and connect to a EV3
Demonstrate your understanding and document the outcomes of your project:
A: Inquiry & Analysis
Ai: Design Situation
Explains and justifies the need for a solution to a problem for a specified client/target audience.
Aii: Research
Develop a research plan to fuel the inquiry
Aiii: Existing products analysis
Analyze a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem.
Aiv: Design Brief
Develops a detailed design brief, which summarizes the analysis of relevant research.
B: Design Development:
Bi: Specification
Develop design specifications, which clearly state the success criteria for the design of a solution.
Bii: Ideation
Develop a range of feasible design ideas that can be correctly interpreted by others
Biii: Design Choice
Present the chosen design and justify its selection
Biv: Final Design
Develop accurate and detailed planning drawings/diagrams and outline the requirements for the creation of the chosen solution.
C: Creating:
Ci: Planning
Construct a logical plan that describes the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create the solution
Cii: Skills
Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the solution
Ciii: Process
Follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended
Civ: Changes
Fully justify changes made to the chosen design and plan when making the solution
D: Evaluation
Di: Testing methods
Design suitable testing methods to evaluate the success of the solution
Dii: Evaluation
Evaluates the success of the solution against the specification
Diii: Evaluation
Describes how the solution could be improved
Div: Impact
Explains how the solution impacts the client and users
Clarification of deliverables and instructions for each section is included in the Google doc.
You will find an editable copy of this document posted by your class teacher on Toddle
Product presentation
Additionally, you will be asked to present the solution as a proof of concept
All work in design is subject to the UNIS AI policy
If you are unsure of what to do when using AI as a tool for your assessed work, please ask your teacher for clarification.
Ask HAL, our Design assistant powered by SchoolAI.
HAL can help you understand assessments, guide your inquiry & offer feedback.
Check Toddle for your assessment deadline and submission guidelines for this section.
Feedback and Criteria grades will be given by your class teacher for this EOL.
