Keynote Overview
AI promises to augment work, but what counts as an improvement, and for whom? In this talk, I will explore how workplace technologies shape people's work experiences and how we can design them responsibly. Using meetings as a lens on workplace experience, I will draw on studies of collaboration and research using mobile and wearable sensing to explore the importance of psychological safety, physical comfort, and emotional experience alongside effective task execution. I will also examine how employees judge the acceptability of workplace technologies. Turning to generative AI, I will examine how AI assistance shapes confidence and actual understanding, and how knowledge workers develop and share AI expertise. Finally, I will discuss approaches to responsible AI design, including guidelines and tools for disclosing AI use and communicating its risks and benefits.
