Visual Analytics, Visual Interactive AI in Healthcare and Well-Being
Abstract
Healthcare and well-being are increasingly shaped by the integration of data-driven methods and artificial intelligence. Visual Analytics, as the science of analytical reasoning supported by interactive visual interfaces, enables clinicians to explore complex patient histories, stratify cohorts, and derive actionable insights from heterogeneous data sources such as electronic health records, wearables, and digital pathology. Coupling these methods with advances in artificial intelligence creates powerful synergies: machine learning enriches Visual Analytics with predictive and adaptive models, while visual interaction ensures transparency, trust, and human-centered decision-making. Building upon this foundation, Visually Interactive AI expands the paradigm toward embodied, multimodal systems that combine computer vision, speech recognition, and speaker diarization. Preliminary implementations, including a physician-like conversational agent, demonstrate how avatars could engage in empathetic health dialogues, monitor medication adherence, detect subtle cognitive changes, and promote behavioral activation. Framed within Cognition by Design, these systems highlight how AI can be deliberately embedded into daily life not to generate content, but to actively shape cognitive environments, reinforce memory, and foster social connectedness. Together, Visual Analytics and Visually Interactive AI outline a research trajectory toward adaptive, trustworthy, and ethically aligned systems that enhance clinical decision-making, enable early detection of decline, and create personalized interventions. This keynote presents both foundational principles and current prototypes, illustrating how human-centered AI can transform healthcare delivery and support cognitive health in aging societies.
