T3/4: Creativity, Activity, and Service (The CAS Experience):
In T3 and T4, students complete the IB CAS requirement. CAS, which stands for "Creativity, Activity, and Service," encourages students to extend their learning through a series of experiences and projects outside of their IB courses. It entails challenging oneself to plan, organize, carry out, and reflect upon those experiences and projects. Past CAS projects have varied widely, from organizing Model UN and UNIS UN conferences to learning new instruments or producing plays, to running a soccer camp for young children. Students engage in a mix of the Creativity-Activity-Service elements over the course of the T3 and T4 years. You can find more information about CAS in our UNIS CAS Handbook.
T1/2: Service Learning (SL Credit):
T1 students are required to complete 30 credit hours of Service between September 2023 and May 10, 2024.
T2 students are required to complete at least 4 Service Activities + 1 Service Learning Project between September 2023 and May 10, 2024.
All TH students are required to record, reflect, and report details of all Service and CAS work on their ManageBac accounts:
a) Record all Service activities and/or CAS Experiences
b) Respond to a series of Reflection points and learner outcome prompts + IB Learner Outcomes
c) Upload written evidence (read here what forms of evidence are accepted).
Important Note: Completion of T1 / T2 Service-Learning and T3 / T4 CAS Experience is a graduation requirement. Service/ Volunteer work opportunities and internships are frequently posted by the Office of Student Activities (OSA). Students are expected to read their school emails daily, check Schoology, and review the TH Newsletter- where various Service options are published throughout the year.

Awards are an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the outstanding achievements of UNIS students in various domains (academics, sports, leadership, extracurriculars, service, etc). Tutorial House faculty/staff nominate T3 students. The Awards Committee (Tut House Administration, Team Leaders, Counselors, College Counseling, Director of Student Activities, Athletics Department) reviews nominations from the faculty/staff, and makes recommendations to the Principal, who is ultimately responsible for the final decision on all awards. Awards will be presented to T3 students during our Awards Ceremony. Some of the Awards are presented with a check (details below). In order to be nominated, students must be in good academic and behavior standing.
Awards presented at UNIS include:
The Major UNIS Awards are considered the most prestigious, and are presented to T3 students. The U-Thant Award is presented to a T3 student during the Graduation ceremony at the United Nations, by the previous T4 U-Thant scholar.
Memorial Awards honor the memory of those who have helped shape the legacy of UNIS. They are presented to T3 students, except the Desmond Cole and Maurice Pezet Awards which are given out to T1/T2 students and usually presented at UN Day in the following school year.
Sports Awards are compiled and presented by the Athletics Department to Tut House students. The most prestigious of the Sports Awards is presented to the Athletes of the Year (male / female).
The University of Rochester Awards are presented to T3 students by the College Office, on behalf of that university.
For more details on awards criteria and nomination process, see the Student Awards section of the Student and Parent Handbook.
