On Staturday, September 30, 2023, the second edition of Science4all took place in the city center of Padova. Being a consolidated tradition, some members of our group participated to the event.Â
What we present each year is the Chladni Plates experiment. The title of our show is "La matematica del suono" (the mathematics of sound).
Summary: is it possible to give shape to a sound? Ernst Chladni, a german scientist and musician of the eighteenth century, showed in a famous experiment how one can litterally "see" the "movements" of the sound, by playing with a violin bow a metal plate covered with sand. In fact, the sand concentrates in the regions of the plate which remain still during the vibrations, giving rise to particular figures (Chladni figures). During the activity, our members Paolo Luzzini and Paolo Musolino replicate the experiment using a source of acoustic waves, explain (in an informal, simple way) the relationship with the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, and present a series of questions and curiosities on the Mathematics of Sound.
