James Norman is an Airbus 330 pilot for Delta Air Lines, and also works in the flight data monitoring program and SMS group on behalf of the airline's pilot association. He specializes in exploring artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities to enhance aviation safety. He holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Sciences from the University of North Dakota, where his research examined factors affecting voluntary safety reporting among pilots, maintenance, dispatchers and controllers.
His research occupies the intersection of emerging technology and safety science. He has developed neural networks to model pilot fatigue, created innovative natural language processing (NLP) applications for textual safety data, and applied AI deep learning techniques in general aviation flight patterns for anomaly detection. His academic research bridges Safety-II principles and resilience engineering with advanced data analytics, influenced by thinkers such as Erik Hollnagel, Sidney Dekker, and Carsten Busch.
James Normans's current activities and interests include:
International widebody flight operations
Academic research and publication relating to aviation safety and data ethics
Flight data analysis
SMS integration for U.S. and Canadian airlines
Providing education on artificial intelligence applications for aviation safety
