We are part of the larger SupRa Lab Rome at La Sapienza university together with prof. Stefano Di Stefano and prof. Osvaldo Lanzalunga.
Giorgio is the director of the group. He is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at La Sapienza università di Roma since 2024. Previously, he studied Chemistry and obtained a PhD in Chemical Sciences (2015) at this same university. Then, he moved to Girona, Spain for 5 years (2016-2020) to undertake postdoctoral research in the grorup of Prof. Miquel Costas. Giorgio went back to Rome in 2021 to start his independent career first as Assistant (RTD-b, 2021-2024) and now as Associate Professor. He teaches Organic Chemistry III (organic spectroscopy and laboratory) to Chemistry Bachelor students.
Roberta Marino was born in Rome. She completed both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Sapienza University of Rome. During her bachelor’s studies in Chemistry, she wrote a theoretical dissertation on the fundamentals of Dynamic Combinatorial Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Di Stefano, graduating in December 2022 with full marks (110/110 cum laude). For her master’s degree in Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry, she carried out an internship in the laboratory of Prof. Giorgio Olivo, where she worked on aromatic amination using hydroxylamine-derived reagents. She graduated in October 2024 with an experimental thesis, once again achieving full marks (110/110 cum laude). In November 2024, she began her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Giorgio Olivo. Her current research focuses on the reactivity of hydroxylamine-derived reagents, with particular emphasis on divergent Fe-promoted amination pathways and nitrogen insertion into ketones through a modified Beckmann mechanism.
Giorgia Urriani was born in San Benedetto del Tronto (AP). In July 2023, she completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Chemistry with full marks (110/110 cum laude) at Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna, carrying out an internship in the laboratory of Prof. Stefano Zacchini, where she worked on synthesis and reactivity of sulfur-containing iron carbide carbonyl clusters. In October 2025, she achieved her Master’s Degree in Industrial Chemistry with full marks (110/110 cum laude) at the same university, conducting an internship under the supervision of Prof. Giorgio Bencivenni and defending an experimental thesis about atroposelective photoisomerization of styrenic systems. In November 2025, she began her PhD in Chemical Sciences at La Sapienza - University of Rome under the supervision of Prof. Giorgio Olivo. Her current research focuses on the aliphatic C-H functionalization using supramolecular catalysis.
I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Sciences from Sapienza University of Rome, with a thesis focused on the synthesis of paroxetine. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Chemistry, specialising in organic and biomolecular chemistry, and carrying out a research thesis on the applications of nanometric cavities.
I discussed my PhD in Chemical Sciences at La Sapienza university of Rome under the supervision of prof. Giorgio Olivo and prof. Stefano Di Stefano in 2025. My research focuses on addressing fundamental challenges in organic synthesis through biomimetic catalytic approaches, particularly the oxidative functionalization of C-H bonds using non-heme complexes based on earth-abundant metals such as Fe, Mn, and Cu. A deep understanding of the factors that govern the catalytic power of these biomimetic systems is essential both to elucidate how nature performs such transformations and to drive progress in synthetic organic chemistry. I have investigated activation strategies, structure–reactivity relationships, and catalytic applications of these systems, with a strong emphasis on understanding the key factors governing their reactivity and selectivity. A major part of my work explores how substrate orientation and proximity, modulated via supramolecular recognition, influence C-H oxidation mediated by high-valent FeIV/V(O) and MnIV/V(O) species. Additionally, I collaborated with Beaumont Italia chemical industry on the design and synthesis of novel emulsifying and anti-corrosive compounds.
