Giorgio Olivo was born in Formia, a small town on the coast beweeen Rome and Naples. He pursued his Master (2011-2012) and PhD studies (2012-2015) in Chemistry at “La Sapienza” University of Rome under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Di Stefano, investigating oxidation processes mediated by nonheme Fe complexes from a mechanistic perspective (Thesis title: Nonheme iron complexes as catalysts for non-activated C-H oxidation reactions). During the PhD, he enjoyed two research stays at university of Girona (Spain) and ESRF (France) for an overall period of 8 months. In 2016, he joined the group of Prof. M. Costas (QBIS) at University of Girona (Spain) as a Juan De la Cierva Postdoc fellow, where he explored a supramolecular strategy to control selectivity in C(sp3)-H oxidation reactions catalyzed by Fe and Mn complexes. He also contributed to the development of enantioselective C-H lactonization of free carboxylic acids. In 2021 he moved back to Rome (“La Sapienza” university) as an Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry (RTD-b, 2021-2024). Since November 2024, he is Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry at the same university, where he teaches Organic Chemistry III to Chemical Sciences undergraduates (Spectroscopic identification of organic compounds, 120 hours) and Organic Chemistry to Natural Sciences undergraduates.
His research focuses on the use of supramolecular chemistry tools to control reactivity and selectivity in organic reactions, from radical C-H functionalization to macrocyclization processes, and on iron oxidation and amination catalysis.
Here is his profile published in Angewandte Chemie.
