30 March - 2 April 2022
The research group took part in the Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America-Dublin 2022 with a round table focusing on Language Learning and Cultural Contact in Europe in the Early Modern Age and a two-session panel on Multilingualism and Language Teaching. The results of the first stages of the research, carried out in the framework of the 2020 project Between Babel and Pentecost: language learning and cultural contact (of Europe) in the early modern age, were presented in this occasion and shared with a large, specialized audience. Exchange of ideas and contacts with colleagues contributed to strengthening the cohesion of the group and made it possible to identify the new research directions that will be developed in the 2022 project Parallel texts: multilingual practices between ambivalence and equivalence in the early modern age.
Multilingual Didactic Texts Across Early Modern Europe, Asia And The Americas”

16-17 February 2023
The mysterious and terrible Tower of Babel by Athanasius Kircher on the poster of the conference “Multilingual Didactic Texts Across Early Modern Europe, Asia And The Americas” (16-17 February 2023) organised at Sapienza University of Rome iconically presents the objectives of the meeting. Turris Babel is the title of Kircher's book (1679), at the centre of which is the tale of the Tower’ construction, as well as the demonstration of the very impossibility of erecting it as far as the Coelum Lunae, and finally of its destruction and the consequent confusio linguarum, from which all modern language families would be generated. The conference programme introduced by John Gallagher with a keynote titled “Old texts, new directions: the early modern conversation manual”, and with four sessions devoted to Missionary Linguistics, Italian Crossroads, Teaching and learning through literature, and Lexicographers, explored the ways in which human endeavour, intelligence, inventiveness and the desire to communicate with the other (and certainly also to possess the Other), moved their steps in the world of early modernity through dialogue and confrontation among languages, and through the effort to teach languages as a vehicle of culture. The conference also marked the official kick off of the international research group activites, and the launch of its identifying acronym EmoDiCon and its logo.

The conference "Text and/as image in early modern polyglot books" (Université Paris Nanterre, February 2024), a collaboration between the EMoDiCon project and the Translation and Polyglossia in Early Modern England project, focused on the visual element in the co-presence of several languages in early modern didactic texts. Members of the research group presented papers in which they analysed the part played by images in facilitating translingual communication and language learning across continents in the early modern age.
