School, Conference, and Workshops
The topic of the Heidelberg Summer School 2022 is
Astronomy, astrochemistry and the origin of life
The school will take place August 22 - 26, 2022 at the "Mathematikon", INF 205, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany.
The summer school is open to graduate students and junior postdocs working in astronomy anywhere in the world.
Application deadline is June 1, 2022

The MPIA offers up to six positions for internships every year to bright bachelor and master students who desire to acquire hand-on experience of research and instrument development in astronomy, or wish to fulfill their degree's requirement. At least two internships will be awarded to candidates from developing countries (see attached list).
The institute proposes students to work full-time for two to three months on various research projects (see attached list). Travel costs are supported and a salary is offered (about 1000€/month, or 820€/month net with full social benefits), as necessary. The internship typically takes place during the summer (between May and September) but not necessarily. Assistance will be provided to seek accommodations as close as possible to the institute or the city centre -which is not easy in such a touristic city as Heidelberg.
The dead-line for submission for an internship in 2022 is January 14th, at midnight CET. We expect to invite 4 to 6 interns.
Non-EU national bachelor students: please see the important note at the bottom of this page.
Feel free to contact the coordinator, Dr. Bertram Bitsch at (internship@mpia.de) for more information.

The Leiden/ESA Astrophysics Program for Summer Students (LEAPS) 2022
Applications for LEAPS 2022 will be open in late January 2022 and project details will be listed by then. We plan to run an in person summer school in 2022 but this may change depending on how the COVID-19 pandemic develops.
Overview
LEAPS is an opportunity for students with an interest in astronomy and astrophysics to perform a 10 week summer research project in collaboration with a research scientist from Leiden Observatory or ESA. The program is open to all students not currently engaged in a Ph.D. program, although most past participants have been senior-undergraduate or masters' students who are enthusiastic about research in astrophysics.
Students are selected for the program based on their academic achievements and research potential. Each applicant has the opportunity to choose up to two projects of interest, and they are selected by project advisors based on what they indicate their scientific interests and experience to be. Research at Leiden Observatory and ESA takes place on a diverse array of topics (see below for LEAPS 2021 projects), and student projects will likely consist of anything from the analysis of data from world-class telescopes, to large computer simulations, to hands-on work in the astrochemistry laboratories.
The LEAPS 2021 program will run from mid June for 10 weeks (exact dates to be confirmed) although start dates for specific projects may vary.

4th ESO Summer Research Programme Garching, Germany - 4 July - 12 August 2022
Application process open (deadline: 4 February 2022, 23:59 CET)
For six weeks in the summer of 2022, ESO will host the third Summer Research Programme. This fully-funded programme is an opportunity for university students interested in astronomy/astrophysics, who are not yet enrolled in a PhD programme, to obtain research experience alongside astronomers based at ESO Headquarters (HQ) in Garching, Germany. We accept applications from promising university students from any country, although priority will be given to students from ESO Member States, Strategic Partners (Australia) and the Host State (Chile).
The Summer Research Programme will be hosted in Garching if all accepted students are able to travel to ESO HQ. If the COVID-19 pandemic does not allow an in-person visit, the programme will be held virtually as it was done in 2020 and 2021.

ESO research studentship programme 2021/22 - For PhD students!
The ESO research studentship programme provides an outstanding opportunity for PhD students to experience the exciting scientific environment at one of the world's leading observatories. ESO's studentship positions are open to students enrolled in a university PhD programme in astronomy or related fields. Students accepted into the programme work on their doctoral project under the formal supervision of their home university, but they come to ESO to work and study under the co-supervision of an ESO staff astronomer for a period of between one and two years.
The studentship selection takes place twice per year: on May 31st and November 30th.
Next closing date for this application round will be ++++++++ May 31th 2022++++++

The ESO Summer Research Programme provides a unique opportunity to students not yet enrolled into a PhD programme, to carry out a 6-week long research project at the ESO Headquarters in Garching (Germany)*. This fully funded programme will allow the participants to choose between a wide range of research projects, covering many areas of astronomy from planet formation to cosmology. The ESO Summer Research Programme will also provide opportunities beyond research, including lectures, a mini-workshop, and social activities.
* The Summer Research Programme will be hosted in Garching if all accepted students are able to travel to ESO HQ. If the COVID-19 pandemic does not allow an in-person visit, the programme will be held virtually as it was done in 2020.

SIGRAV International School 2021: Gravity of Astrophysical Objects and Gravitational Waves
1 - 5 February 2021, Vietri sul Mare, Italy
The school, organised by the Italian Society of General Relativity and Gravitation (SIGRAV) in February 2021, aims at providing robust and deep knowledge of Physics and Astrophysics of the compact objects in the context of General Relativity and its possible modifications. The school will include courses devoted to the detection and the analysis of the Gravitational Wave signals emitted by these objects from the nano to kiloHertz frequency bandwidth.
