Project 1: The Audible World
Deadline: Due April 17th
The rattling vent pushing fresh air into the room. The shuffling feet of the person seated next to you. The low hum of the computers all around you. The sound of a vibrating phone in your backpack. The ceaseless whisper of every breath you take. The thumping of your heart pumping blood through your vascular system. You are swimming in sound. You are practically drowning in it.
For the most part, we do not notice it, but the audible world is just as intense as the visual world. In order to appreciate and become more aware of it, you must first use your ears as your eyes.
This assignment will require that you slow down from the hectic pace our world. For one day, using a recording device of your choosing, try and capture as many sounds as you can from the audible world. Using Adobe Audition and Audacity, you will then use these sounds to create a 2:00 audio composition that reflects a day in your life. The composition can be linear or non-linear, but you may only use the audio you captured. Once that is done, you will remix the composition down to 1:00 and then another to 30 seconds.
The finished composition(s) must be a .mp3 or .wav file and uploaded to the class website and google folder.
Project 2: Time Stops
Deadline: May 1st.
Use one of the sound composition from Project 2 to create a stop motion animation, time-lapse sequence or a combination of both techniques of equal length to your sound clip. You may not add or subtract from the original sound composition. The animation may reflect the visuals associated with the sounds of your day or you may choose to deviate completely from them. The goal of this assignment will be to accurately drive visuals based on auditory cues.
Project 3: Artificial Narrative
Deadline: May 13th
Create a 2:30 minute video (no more no less) that explores the following:
Collaborating with Artificial Intelligence, create a short video/animation that communicates a story or concept. Using ChatGPT, generate a 250 word script from a story you either write yourself or have the AI assist you. You will then make a 2:30 video that is guided by the AI script. Try to make the concept something that is meaningful to you, perhaps exploring identity, social issues, or environmental concerns. You could explore the fantastic, the surreal, the impossible or nonlinear time. If you have trouble finding inspiration, consider this question to guide the AI with:
What person, thing, or idea would you surrender to or from your life?
You can appropriate images from mass media - movies, television, music videos, CNN, home-shopping network, etc., or use your own captured video for this assignment. Your audio could be voiceover, appropriated/found sound or a combination of all them.
Before you start production, you will need to create a story board or ideation of some sort. Please post this to your project website.
What is a story board you ask? Well, a storyboard is a series of images that represent the flow of scenes or edits in a video or film. Usually each "frame" in the storyboard has a caption associated with it that describes the action, event, or transition in the scene. Below are a couple of links to some storyboards you can look at. They should give you an idea of what I expect from you.

Project 4: End Time
Deadline: Last day of class
After the previous four assignments, you will be expected to create a time-based project of your own design. The concepts of the project should inform the way they are presented.
I will meet with each of you individually to help determine a logical course of study for the project. You may wish to make a short video, a sound piece, a video/sound installation, a stop motion animation, projection, or any other time-based project. You may also consider working in collaboration in teams of three.
If you are having trouble coming up with your own concept, the project below is an option:
Kinetic Typography
In the last few years, kinetic, type-driven projects have increased in popularity, showing up in movie intros, commercials, and music videos. For this assignment, create an example of this technique using whatever audio sample you would like, preferably focusing on a speech you find inspiring or, better yet, a poem you have written! That said, it could also be a snippet from a movie, or tv show. The length should be at least 2 minutes. Below are some examples of kinetic typography for you browse:
