The University of Marília (UNIMAR) will host the International Symposium on Health Sciences: Diabetes, Obesity, and Cancer, bringing together renowned specialists to discuss therapeutic advances, innovative strategies, and new perspectives in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these major health conditions.

Highlights of the event include new approaches in the management of diabetes and cardiorenal disease, as well as modern treatments for obesity, presented by Drs. Lance A. Sloan and Kátia P. Sloan from the Texas Institute for Kidney and Endocrine Disorders (USA). Brazilian experts such as Professor Rui Curi and Professor Tania Cristina Pithon-Curi, from the Butantan Institute and Universidade Cruzeiro do Sul, will address the unique characteristics of type 2 diabetes without obesity and the benefits of physical exercise in these patients.
Metabolic syndrome will be explored through an innovative perspective by Professor Sandra M. Barbalho (UNIMAR), while updated therapeutic strategies for diabetes will be presented by Professor Jesselina F. A. Haber (UNIMAR). Professor Roberto Bazotte (State University of Maringá) will highlight insulin resistance associated with structural changes in the liver.
In the field of oncology, preventive nutritional strategies will be presented by Professor Anupam Bishayee (Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, USA), while Professor Sérgio Affonso (UNIMAR) will discuss recent advances in oncology. Professor M. Angélica Miglino (UNIMAR) will examine the relationship between the extracellular matrix and cancer.
The symposium will also feature an interdisciplinary roundtable and technical visits to UNIMAR’s advanced facilities, including the Oncology Hospital, Technology Park, Tissue and Organ Factory, and Cell Bank — underscoring the institution’s commitment to bridging scientific research and clinical application.
