Dr. Rui Curi is a pharmacist-biochemist who graduated from the State University of Maringá and holds both a Master’s and a PhD in Human Physiology from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of São Paulo (ICB-USP). He completed postdoctoral fellowships at world-renowned institutions such as the University of Oxford (United Kingdom), the Free University of Brussels (Belgium), the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, and the National Institutes of Health (USA).
He was a full professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at ICB-USP, where he also served as department head and director of the institute. He currently serves as Vice Director of the Butantan Institute and Technical Director of the Immunobiological Production Unit at its Bioindustrial Center.
His scientific work is internationally recognized in the fields of leukocyte metabolism, immunometabolism, and bioenergetics, with emphasis on the roles of glutamine and fatty acids in immune and inflammatory function. Dr. Curi has published more than 330 scientific articles and has extensive experience in academic training, having supervised dozens of master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers.
He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. Over the course of his career, he has received several prestigious honors, including the Scopus/CAPES Award, the Commendation from the Federal Pharmacy Council, the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from UEM, and the Distinguished Fellow title from Curtin University in Australia.
