About Penang
Along the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, you’ll find Malaysia’s only ‘island state’, Penang. The Pearl of the Orient, as it is popularly known, is one of the country’s premier tourist destinations. Once known for its jungle-covered hills and sandy beaches, these remain but it is now a bustling modern city-state that retains its historical sites, earning its capital city, George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Among Malaysians, it is a ‘foodie destination’ with gastronomical delights on offer at all hours of the day. Approximately two million people call Penang home and form a close-knit community of diverse ethnicities, cultures and dialects.
