1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development

ARISDE 2024

a joint event of the IEEE 59th International Scientific Conference on Information, Communication

and Energy Systems and Technologies (ICEST 2024)

Background and Goals

In the context of disruptive technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) has taken on a key role in creating information systems capable of simulating human ability and behavior. It is particularly true in recent times with the development of generative AI methods (e.g. ChatGPT) which are revolutionising human-machine interaction in different fields. This led to new regulations in using and adopting AI systems in order to preserve human rights and  pursue responsible and trustworthy conduct. AI mainly includes machine learning and deep learning, natural language processing, speech, expert systems, vision, robotics, and planning, scheduling and optimisation.

In the last few years, AI systems have emerged as the new frontier of the digital transition and innovation for supporting sustainable development in everyday life. This is relevant in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals that must be achieved by 2030 globally by all UN member countries. This means that every country on the planet is called upon to provide its contribution to jointly address these challenges, including fighting against poverty and hunger, health and wellness, inclusive and equitable quality education, affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy, sustainable consumption and production models, fighting against climate change and its consequences, sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources.

According to these needs, the 1st International Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development (ARISDE 2024) aims to be a premier forum for presenting survey and original academic and industrial research contributions in machine learning and deep learning, translation, classification and clustering, information extraction, speech recognition, expert systems, robotics and affective computing, intelligent human-agent interaction, vision, planning, scheduling and optimisation, favouring a sustainable societal development.

ARISDE 2024 is also proposed as a stimulating environment for industrial partners that want to present innovative products and services pursuing the 2030 UN objectives for sustainable development.
