Why is this being voted on this November?
The Iowa Legislature recently passed a law that no longer allows spring referendums, districts are now only allowed the option to have school referendums once a year in November. The board agreed that 2023 was a better year than 2024 to vote on facility needs.
With construction inflation going up 10%-15% per year, the financially responsible path is 2023.
It would be difficult for the referendum details to be properly communicated during the 2024 presidential election.
What is a “secure entryway”?
An updated safe and secure entry would require all visitors to check in with the office staff in person before being allowed access to the school. This way, we can be sure that only visitors we approve have access to our buildings.
A secure entrance means that staff control who has access to the building so we know that our students are safe.
There are other improvements that could further enhance security, such as improved camera systems, double locked entrances that only allow access through the office, and more.
If the referendum passes, when will the project be completed?
Many variables impact the timing of completion when considering all buildings will have work being completed. Items that need to be considered include contractor and materials availability, storage for classroom furniture and equipment, and new equipment and material lead times.
If the referendum passes, will teachers and staff be part of the planning process?
Yes, Underwood teachers and staff will have the opportunity to weigh in on the final planning decisions.
