Dr. Omid Shoghli serves as an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is the director of SIAM Lab. His research focuses on applications of advanced machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, and human-computer studies in solving critical problems in designing, building, operating, and maintaining civil and transportation infrastructure. Through innovative, interdisciplinary research, he works to advance the safety, intelligence, efficiency, and sustainability of infrastructure systems and the communities they serve.
Dr. Shoghli has led and contributed to high-impact interdisciplinary projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), and Leidos. He is actively engaged in national transportation research leadership through the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies. He serves as Chair of TRB’s Standing Committee on Maintenance Management (AKJ14) and previously served as Research Coordinator and co-founder of TRB’s Standing Committee on Maintenance Management Systems (AKT70). He also previously served as a member of TRB’s Standing Committee on Maintenance and Operations Management (AKR10). Dr. Shoghli also serves as an Associate Editor for Transportation Research Record (TRR). Prior to academia, he gained more than four years of industry experience in a consulting engineering role focused on infrastructure management. His earlier work includes developing a multi objective decision support system for roadway maintenance at the Center for Highway Asset Management Programs at Virginia Tech.
