Dr. Omid Shoghli serves as an associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and is the director of SIAM Lab. His research focuses on applications of advanced machine learning, virtual and augmented reality, and human-computer studies in solving critical problems in designing, building, operating, and maintaining civil and transportation infrastructure. Through innovative, interdisciplinary research, Dr. Shoghli aims to foster the safety, intelligence, efficiency, and sustainability of our critical infrastructure and communities. During his academic career, he has successfully conducted extensive studies on high-impact interdisciplinary research funded by NSF, NCHRP, VDOT, NCDOT, and Leidos. Dr. Shoghli is also engaged in several national efforts in the Transportation Research Board (TRB), a division of the National Academy of Sciences. He is the research coordinator and co-founder of the TRB's standing committee on Maintenance Management Systems (AKT70) and also an active member of the standing committee on Maintenance and Operations Management (AKR10). Dr. Shoghli is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Transportation Research Record (TRR), where he contributes his expertise to the advancement of knowledge in the transportation research community. In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Shoghli has gained valuable industry experience by working for over four years in a consulting engineering company focusing on infrastructure management. His prior completed research projects involve developing a multi-objective decision support system for roadway maintenance while working at the Center for Highway Asset Management Programs at Virginia Tech.
