My name is Jaalil Hart, and I am a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction and Urban Education program at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My research agenda broadly investigates how teachers work effectively with students and families in urban settings and can be explored in two lines of inquiry. My first line of research explores the complex relationships between students, parents/families, and teachers in urban schools, and how these relationships impact students' overall schooling experiences. The second line of study explores how teachers utilize culturally sustaining practices in urban elementary schools, and how teacher education programs prepare their candidates for this work.Â
Most recently, my professional development efforts have been focused on building partnerships between parents and families to support their child's educational journey. As the founding MTSS Coordinator for KIPP North Carolina, I have the privilege of collaborating with educators to design and implement effective systems to meet the needs of all students.
My professional teaching experience has been one of the most fulfilling experiences to date. I taught kindergarten and second grade as a former classroom teacher for seven years. My most recent classroom experience is teaching kindergarten at Niner University Elementary (NUE) at Amay James. NUE is a laboratory school operated by UNC Charlotte, serving students from traditionally low-performing schools.
In summary, my passion lies in understanding and improving students' educational experiences in urban settings. Through my research and professional endeavors, I strive to create equitable opportunities and outcomes for all students.
Outside of professional activities, I enjoy playing golf, exploring new recipes, traveling with family and friends, and cheering on my NC A&T Aggies and the Carolina Panthers!
