The Altantic Beach Pier, 1981
The picture was taken in 1981, long after Hurricane Dora decapitated the Atlantic Beach (FL) pier. As a child my brother and I played in the shade of that pier. Our father fished from it. The pier is not very long anymore, but still holds a space in Atlantic Beach. The picture to the left was probably taken in the early 1970s. During summers our Director of Christian Education from Community Presbyterian Church held Thursday morning devotions on the pier. In 1995, I got permission from the condo association that owns it now to be married there.
My father used to say, 'There's no place like Atlantic Beach.' I agree with him. He went to Fletcher and fought in WWII along with Ahern, David, Bull, and Sturdivant. They played football together at Fletcher. Ahern, David, Bull, and Sturdivant along with many other men and women across the United States didn't make it back. I often wonder what they would have done, said, become? May we always honor those who serve and those who served.
