SEA (Semillero de Estadística y Análisis de Datos) began in 2021 as an initiative to use statistical models to study gender gaps within Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
In 2023, it was formally established under the name SEA and led by me, bringing together 20–25 undergraduate students from Statistics, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, and Computer Science.
Our main goal is to create interdisciplinary spaces for research, academic exchange, and collaborative learning, with statistics as a central tool. Each year, students propose new research projects through brainstorming sessions. We invite professors and experts from different fields to guide us with the project development.
In 2024, SEA received support from the DAAD to undertake a two-week research exchange in Germany and share experiences with leading academic groups. The group visited Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, hosted by Prof. Dr. Sonja Greven, and Freie Universität Berlin, hosted by Prof. Dr. Jan Marcus.
This experience strengthened our international academic connections and exposed students to new perspectives on statistical research and its applications. It also reinforced SEA’s commitment to fostering research experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom environment.
Since 2022, SEA has maintained an outstanding and sustained participation in the International Symposium on Statistics (ISS, SIE in Spanish), held annually in Colombia. Students have presented research projects covering diverse topics and applications, demonstrating the breadth of interests within the group.
These presentations have provided students with valuable opportunities to communicate their work, interact with researchers, and receive academic feedback.
Through these activities, SEA continues to grow as a space for undergraduate research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the development of future data professionals.
