At Miriam School and Learning Center, we empower each unique learner by building confidence and laying a foundation for success at our K-12 school, as well as through our Miriam Learning Center outreach programs. Miriam takes students and their families on a journey to see how their differences are actually strengths. Our students' challenges often include specific learning disabilities, ADHD, level 1 autism, speech/language disorders, anxiety and sensory processing differences. Missouri Mentor's Community Services help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with their medical needs and other challenges. Our mission is to help them grow and thrive. Our residential and community-based services are designed to help each person we serve reach their full potential so they can live their best lives.
Heartland Industries is an Extended Employment Sheltered Workshop which provides safe, meaningful, and dignified work to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Heartland contracts with over 30 local and regional companies in the areas of packaging, hand assembly, and knitting, which ensures engaging and challenging jobs. Not only do employees gain important job skills, but they are also able to hone their soft skills and their social skills while earning an income. PAWS (Preparing Adults for Work and Society) is an Inclusive Post-secondary option for students with intellectual disabilities.
Students will participate in skill-focused classes specific to the PAWS program as well as courses offered to degree-seeking students, centering around meeting individual goals. Students will work with advisors, faculty, and tutors during this four-semester program, and pursue vocational opportunities in hopes of potential long-term, meaningful employment.
PAWS students will be part of the Mizzou community, live on campus in the residence halls, participate in courses, study for and take exams, and be a part of the day-to-day social interactions of the undergraduate experience.

The Saint Louis Huggs Owner-Trained Service Dog Program stands out as a robust and thorough initiative, spanning a well-structured two-year curriculum. Over four semesters, participants undergo a series of evaluations and tests at regular intervals, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of service dog work. The program not only prioritizes theoretical knowledge but also emphasizes practical application through monthly group training outings and four group canine training classes. Participants benefit from independent training outing workbooks, providing a valuable resource for reinforcing their learning. What sets this program apart is its commitment to fostering a sense of community, offering access to highly skilled trainers and a supportive network of fellow service dog teams. This holistic approach ensures that both individuals and their canine companions are well-prepared for the challenges and rewards of service dog work upon completion of the program.
The UMSL Social Peers Program was developed in 2021 by Lindsay S. Athamanah, Ph.D. using the Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Ryan & Deci, 2000). The program focuses on addressing the students’ autonomy, competence, and relatedness within a framework aimed at (a) participant motivations and expectations, (b) valuable social-environmental contexts, and (c) the nature of relationships (Fisher et al., 2019).
The Missouri Youth Leadership Forum is a FREE five-day, four-night leadership training and career awareness program for high school students with disabilities. It provides training in leadership, self-advocacy skills, and career awareness. Students learn more about their disability and others’ disabilities, analyze their strengths and weaknesses, and gain skills to become self-determined individuals. They also learn different leadership styles, the legislative process, disability laws, and much more! Students gain the power to reach their post-secondary goals in education, employment, and independent living.

St. Louis County Library will host a Community Autism Expo on Saturday, April 5 from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Clark Family Branch. The Expo will provide information for families with children on the autism spectrum. Representatives from over 40 area organizations will be on hand to discuss their services, and library staff will share resources available at the library. The Expo is free and open to the public.
