Below the streets of Saint Louis
We have seen what is above, now lets go below. The images I first found were on St. Louis public radios site. This first image is an entrance manhole to the underground at 11th and Washington street, downtown. You can see the tangled web of wires and pipes on the way in. It is not open to the public any longer.
Looking down into the hole you see cement dust layered and mixed with dirt. You can feel the coolness of the underground the lower down the ladder you descend. Its pretty bland colored from this view as the light shines where it seldom goes.
You can hear the cars engines racing by, their brakes squealing and horns of warning in traffic are muffled out and turn into vibrations as you reach the bottom. Exhaust fumes turn to a damp clay moist odor. You can taste the unclear air.
Most drivers or pedestrians are only concerned with where they are navigating to next on their drive or walk. We are taking a look at all the connected tunnels and caves . Let's look at one business connected intricately to the underground.
(Above) Photos of what is under the local streets downtown. Brewery's used tunnels and caves to store their beer. Some parts are man made and some naturally occurring tunnels.

The Lemp Brewery and Mansion are connected to these underground tunnels. The Lemp's had a brewery in St. Louis from 1892 until prohibition closed them down in 1920. Their portion of the tunnels and caves are said to be haunted by family members. I certainly did not think we would find ghosts under the streets. The Lemp's had access to the underground and caves from their brewery. “He would walk to work underground in the caves. How cool is that?” Dan Faupel said. “They had a theater, bowling alley, swimming pool underground and there is still remnants.” (KsdK interview about the family)
Take a look with me inside the caves and tunnels under the streets and buildings that still remain from the Lemp Brewery (below) in an amazing video.
