I have walked the city streets of Saint Louis for many years and never thought about what could possibly be under them, until I met a friend, Mark. Mark mentioned that he worked in the underground of the city for over 30 years and it struck my curiosity of what could dwell below. I am going to take you on the fact finding journey with me that I took exploring more information to answer my question. Is there an unknown underground of Saint Louis? I first googled for stories about the underground to see if it even existed. What I found was a ton of information that quite frankly was a bit overwhelming. There were stories, shows, documentaries and even books written on every topic from when it was under the sea to the current multi-billion-dollar sewer initiative, Project Clear. I decided to divide our journey of information gathering into three sections.(BELOW) We can be speleologist's together. Come along with me on our first stop as we enter the underground through a manhole.
The first section I'll call The Concrete Jungle. Its what I would have thought was under the streets of any major city.
The second section is The Saint Louis Sewer System. I never considered the amount of waste and rain water that needed to go somewhere daily.
The last section is a real treat called The Cherokee Cave. There is real beauty and history in the cave system under the streets of our city.
