RESEARCH INTERESTS

Application of machine learning and deep learning to network management and security, deployment of virtual resources on single and multiple clouds, Network function virtualization, software defined infrastructures and multi-cloud systems, AI in cybersecurity, IoT-edge-main cloud AI in massively distributed applications like healthcare, AI based management of faults and performance issues of telecommunications networks, algorithms for multi-cloud deployment and management of resources and security of 5G networks.

  1. Industrial/Professional:

  • Head, Telecommunications Engineering Center, Ministry of Communications, New Delhi, India. Worked on cloud computing, security, future networks, radio networks, specifications and testing of network equipment.

  • Head, Technology Development, Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India New Delhi, India. Worked on National Broadband Plan, Migration to Next Generation all Internet Protocol Networks, Intelligent Networks, inter-operator interconnections and technology development.

  • Senior General Manager, Internet and Broadband division, BSNL, New Delhi, India. Worked on planning and deployment of broadband ADSL access, Ethernet aggregation and MPLS/IP core network.

  • Area Manager with a large telecommunications operator, India. Worked on Electronic switches, fiber optic network, computerization of customer interfaces, planning introduction of new technologies and computerization activities.

  • Consultant for TCIL-BellSouth project for Telecom Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur in the team involved in development of software for network planning. Reviewed analysis and design, checked algorithms, created test data and evaluated results.

  • Extensive work in Python, C, TensorFlow, Keras, Pandas, Weka and MATLAB.

  1. Teaching:

  • Full time senior teaching faculty at Etisalat Academy, Dubai, UAE. Developed, organized, conducted and taught courses on planning and design of transport and access networks based on copper, fiber optic and broadband technologies. Received best instructor award.

  • Head, faculty of Network Planning at Advanced Level Telecommunications Academy in India. Developed and taught courses on teletraffic engineering and computer based network planning including forecasting.

  • Teaching faculty at the Advanced Level Telecommunications Academy, New Delhi, India. Developed, conducted and taught computer courses including Programming Languages, Digital Techniques, Data Communications, Digital Switching Systems, Structured Programming, Structured Systems Analysis and Design, Data Base Management Systems

RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

Research

My current research broadly focusses on the following: resolving the management and security issues in massively distributed virtual network services over multi-clouds (edge-main and main-main) and use of these services for providing secure pervasive critical infrastructure services like healthcare networks, finance and public utilities. The methods and algorithms developed during this research find application in areas like smart cities, carrier and enterprise networks and monitoring of critical patients. These research directions are socially relevant and have potential to improve quality of life of communities. I have published thirteen first author as well as several co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals/conferences (see publications). Some of the Other research experiences are as follows:

  • NSF/SaTC: Cybersecurity of Critical Infrastructure Services Using Hierarchical Merged Deep Neural Network Models (Under Review)

  • Sony Faculty Innovation Award: Security of Collaborative Edge-Cloud AI for IoT Driven Healthcare (Under Review)

  • UM System Broadband Research on broadband and cybersecurity 2022-23 (funded)

  • UMSL Internal Research Awards “Inter-domain cybersecurity in next generation healthcare using explainable deep learning models for UMSL Research Awards 2020 (funded for 2021-22)

  • One of my proposals is under consideration at ITU-T, Geneva for standardization. Work Item Y.e2efapm, “Cloud Computing - End-to-end fault and performance management framework of virtual network services in inter-cloud,” to ITU Study Group 13. The item has been upgraded to draft recommendation in July 2018.

  • Won award at the Broadcom Foundation International University Research Competition, 2015, with the work on “Application Delivery Platform for Multicloud and IoT-based Applications like Healthcare Monitoring and Delivery.”

  • Vodafone Americas Foundation Sixth Annual Wireless Innovation Project™ Competition, 2014 with the project, “(UAV based) Cellular System for Emergency and Disaster Relief” (Among top 5 proposals)
