Hello! I am a speech-language pathologist and researcher in the area of language disorders. I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and a member of the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program at the University of Missouri. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychological Sciences at the University of Connecticut in 2023 under the mentorship of Dr. Inge-Marie Eigsti and received my PhD in 2021 from the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the mentorship of Dr. Susan Ellis Weismer. I practiced as a speech-language pathologist in early intervention, schools, and private settings from 2012-2016 and was engaged in translational research and supervision throughout that time.
My research examines relationships between language and other cognitive processes in individuals with language disorders, including Developmental Language Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder, from a psycholinguistic lens using behavioral and functional neuroimaging methodologies. I also examine the role of language in long-term outcomes in adolescents and young adults with these conditions, including measures of well-being and self-efficacy. The long-term goal of my research is to answer foundational questions about language development and language processing in neurotypical and clinical populations. My long-term translational goal is to improve differential diagnosis and treatment for individuals with language disorder to affect positive change on their lived experiences.
I also have a special interest in mentorship and service in the profession, including bridging research to practice gaps and supporting junior scientists and clinicians in the field, as well as expanding the academic pipeline for individuals from diverse backgrounds, such as through programs that provide early academic experiences and financial support. I have received teaching and mentorship awards for some of this work.
In my free time, my family loves adventuring, like going for hikes around Columbia.

Sophie graduated from the University of Chicago with a B.A. in Psychology and has prior experience researching the development of social stereotypes in young children and the impact of Imposter Syndrome on early career academics. She is broadly interested in language learning and neurodevelopmental disability and aims to gain more experience in these areas before refining her focus in graduate school.
PhD Students
Josh is a first-year PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program. He graduated from Ohio University with a B.A. In Psychology. After graduating, he began work as a research assistant in the AHAB lab at the University of Pittsburgh under Dr. Anna Marsland investigating the role of biomarkers on age-related cognitive decline. After that, he worked as a research specialist at the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment before joining the LLC Lab in 2024. His current research interests involve working memory and the role it plays in language disorders.
