West Metro Chapter's monthly meetings are start at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of the month (except July & August). Please sign in early for some social time with the other members. Meetings feature a presentation on a nature-related topic and last about 90 minutes. We usually meet in person at Minnetonka Community Center, though sometimes (especially during the winter months) meet via Zoom only. We aim to make all of our in-person meetings available to a Zoom audience (i.e., hybrid).
Tuesday, March 10, 7 pm: A National Legacy--Fifty Years of Nongame Wildlife Conservation in MN With Carrol Henderson, founder of Minnesota's Nongame Wildlife Program
In 1977, Carrol Henderson was hired as Minnesota's first Nongame Wildlife Program Supervisor and was granted an annual budget of $25,000, which included his salary. Since then, thanks to the voluntary tax checkoff and lottery proceeds, the program's budget has increased dramatically. Over his decades-long career with the MN DNR, Carrol reintroduced trumpeter swans and peregrine falcons to our state; brought river otters back to the Minnesota River; and worked to protect lynx, wood turtles, timber rattlesnakes, and more. Fifteen other states have modeled their nongame wildlife programs after ours, which was the first of its kind in the country.
This meeting will be Hybrid (Online and In Person*): Link will be provided shortly before the meeting.
*Important ! Please RSVP to info.mn.wmc@gmail.com to let us know you plan to attend the event in person. (We're expecting a larger-than-usual crowd and want to make sure we have enough seating.)
Tuesday, April 14, 7 pm: HerpMapper!
With Chris Smith, HerpMapper's Director of Public Affairs
HerpMapper is a nonprofit organization designed to gather and share information about reptile and amphibian observations across the planet. Using HerpMapper, you can create records of your herp observations and keep them all in one place. In turn, your data is made available to HerpMapper Partners – groups who use your recorded observations for research, conservation, and preservation purposes. Your observations can make valuable contributions on behalf of amphibians and reptiles.
