your first day

To start your experience with the University of Minnesota as productive as possible, resources have been designed to help you navigate your new role as well as our structure and culture.

First day to dos

1. Meet with your supervisor for orientation of your position. Below are suggestions to discuss at the meeting:

      • Ask for an overview of the functional area – its purpose, organizational structure, and goals. Ask how your job fits in the department, and how your job and department contribute to the unit/school.

      • Review your job description, outline of duties, and expectations.

      • Review hours of work. Ask questions about policies and procedures for breaks, overtime, use of vacation and sick time, holidays, as well as any flexible work policies or procedures.

      • Compile a list of individuals to meet with, or be introduced to, during your first month.

      • For more suggestions on questions to discuss with your supervisor review the UMN Conversation Guide for New Employees.

2. Take a break for lunch. Bring a lunch or money for lunch.

3. Set up your personal workspace including logging into your computer and logging into your phone (make sure to change your voicemail recorded name, no answer greeting, and other settings!)

4. Arrange your parking and transportation (details below).

Parking &

transportation

The University of Minnesota offers two primary parking options.

If you prefer public transportation, the University of Minnesota provides a discount to staff on Metropass, which provides the rider with unlimited transit rides.

The PTS page has additional options used less frequently for parking and transportation. Explore the site to learn more. For employees working on Riverside, work with your supervisor on current parking and transportation options.
