The Summer Observership in Pediatric Subspecialties is an opportunity for UMN Medical Students to gain early exposure to pediatric subspecialty medicine. This focused shadowing experience is 1-2 weeks long and occurs during the summer between MS1 and MS2 years. The program for 2022 will run from June 6th to August 12th, 2022. Each experience will be one week in length, and students can sign up for 1 or 2 sessions.
Clinical observership of a pediatric subspecialty for at least 4-5 days with at least a half day on each day. This may include the following:
Clinics, inpatient rounding, or consults.
Observing interprofessional team members such as genetic counselor, dietitian, PT, OT, speech therapy, social worker, pharmacy, research coordinator, etc.
Observing division teaching or other case conferences.

Summer Internship in Medicine (SIM) is a 2-4 week summer elective between your first and second year where medical students can experience life as a rural healthcare professional. Information sessions are typically held in February, with applications opening early Spring.
Summer Internship in Medical Education (SIME) is a summer long opportunity to work on a medical education project at the UMN's Office of Medical Education. Look for emails in late winter/early spring, applications remain open until mid-March.
