General FAQ
What is UMNEarthSRS?
The Earth Student Research Symposium (UMNEarthSRS) is an event where UMN Graduate and Undergraduate students conducting Earth Science-related research can present their scientific research in a low-stress environment. We also invite submissions on diversity, inclusion, and equity work. This event has grown in size and attendance over the past few years, and plays an important role for students to gain experience in presenting their research (see below for presenter guidelines and requirements). Started by a few graduate students in Spring 2015, this event continues to be planned and run by a committee of graduate and undergraduate students. The symposium is a great chance for students to give a talk in a friendly environment, get feedback from students, researchers and faculty. We hope to see you all there!
Who can attend the symposium?
Any individual in the ESCI, SWAC, SAFL, and CEGE departments interested in Earth and Environmental Sciences is more than welcome to attend! Attendees are usually a mix of undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, researchers and members of the community. All students and faculty who register for the symposium will be able to attend.
What does it cost to register for the symposium?
UMNEarthSRS is an entirely free event organized by students at the University of Minnesota and is open to all who would like to attend. There are no costs for attending or presenting at this event.
What are the requirements for abstracts?
The symposium abstract submission guidelines are the same as for AGU: your abstract must be less than 2500 characters, or around 250 words.
What kinds of events will there be at the Symposium?
In addition to the research talks and presentations, we will also be featuring a Keynote Talk. All students who present at the symposium will be judged by our anonymous judges and eligible for prizes for the best talks and presentations.
Presenter FAQ
Who can present at the symposium?
Undergraduate and graduate students in the UMN Earth & Environmental Science Department, the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate, Water Resources, Saint Anthony Falls Lab, the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering, and UMN Duluth Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences may present at the symposium. Attendance is open to all members of the community.
How do I present at the symposium?
Students interested in presenting at the symposium, must submit an abstract, presentation format preferences (poster or talk), and scheduling constraints by March 10th, 2025.
While we cannot guarantee that all presenters will receive their selected presentation format and session time, we will endeavor to match everyone as best as possible. Organizers will reach out to presenters with finalized presentation format and time slots.
For talks, presenters must have their talk ready for their synchronous presentation time by the day they present. For posters, presenters must have their posters and descriptions. All presenters may choose to receive anonymous feedback on their presentations during the symposium. You may indicate your preferences in the registration form when you submit your abstract.
When is the abstract deadline?
The deadline to submit an abstract to submit at the symposium is March 10th, 2025.
What is the abstract word limit?
The symposium abstract submission guidelines are the same as for AGU: your abstract must be less than 2500 characters, or around 250 words.
What formats are available for presenters at the symposium?
We will be offering 10-15-minute live talk slots and poster presentations for presenters in this year’s symposium.
How do I print my poster?
Use CSE IT to print your poster. Go to this webpage, push the button for "request service", fill out the form, and submit it to have CSE-IT print it out for you. In order to request a poster, you will need to enter the Department as CSENG Earth Sciences, and then select Earth Sciences a second time below. Please keep in mind that CSE-IT suggests submitting your poster for printing at least 48 hours in advance to ensure that they have time to print it off. Once printed, you can pick it up from CSE-IT in Keller Hall 1-201 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm).
What are the poster dimensions?
Please print your poster on regular paper. The poster boards are 3' by 4' so make sure your poster is that size or smaller.
Will my talk/poster be available to anyone on the internet?
All abstracts will be uploaded to this website for attendees to view. Live presentations will not be streamed or available online so we encourage participants to attend in person.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns! You may reach the coordinating committee at umnearthsrs@gmail.com.
