The corporate communications assignments involved writing a proposal to a boss about employee communications, writing an intranet article to a group of employees, and crafting an email discussing the intranet article. I was tasked with finding a company and a topic that employees would need to be informed about, writing to employees and bosses about said topic. The goal was to display my skills in corporate communications, write an article, and practice writing in AP style.
Proposal to Boss:
TO: Staci
FROM: Sydney
Subject: Proposal: Urgent corporate communications
Dear Boss,
The closures throughout Starbucks are an issue that could cause mass worries among employees throughout the country. This is a very important message to share with the
employees to ensure that they are confident in their jobs and feel a sense of job security.
I propose a message going out to all employees about these closures and what this means for the future of the company. It’s important for employees to understand what caused these closures and for stores that are staying open to know that their jobs are safe.
Messaging should include:
Business factors that affected closures
Confirmation of job security
Expectations for the future of current employees
Messaging like this is important to not upset employees and for them to understand that their jobs are not at risk. When looking at the one quote from the CEO talking about maintaining an environment, this would be an important message to share with employees. We should be providing employees with expectations about stores that are staying open and how to ensure that more stores don’t close. It's important to create an honest message for employees so they can continue their jobs with confidence.
Let me know your thoughts and if you would like me to start working on initial messages regarding these topics.
Thank you,
Sydney Stonehouse

Store Closures and What They Mean
10/06/2025
Written by: Starbucks Corporate
Starbucks is at a very pivotal point as a company. Following this year’s brand revamp, as well as new policies to ensure that we are maintaining the coffeehouse experience, there have been many changes. The company, led by CEO Brian Niccol, is hoping to make these changes to maintain great experiences for customers and employees alike. These changes may cause some discomfort. Starbucks has decided to close one percent of its locations nationwide this month.
Niccol and the rest of the Starbucks team stated this was the right move for a fresh start moving forward. Current employees must understand that this decision was not made lightly. Starbucks understands the values of every employee and the importance of job security. This is the only mass closure that we have planned at this time, and current employees should not expect store closures relating to the Starbucks rebrand.
Choosing which locations were to be closed was taken very seriously. This was determined by various factors within the company. Niccol commented on the reasoning, stating that the stores were not “what our customers and partners expect” or weren’t profitable. The closures of stores leave room for the company to redirect time and resources to stores that are set to remain open, and leave more room for improvement as a company.
The company plans to open new locations next year, aligning with the new “coffeehouse experience” company rebrand. Along with new stores aligned with the rebrand, Starbucks plans to renovate over 1,000 pre-existing locations. Although Starbucks is saddened by the closures, we believe that this will bring a new era for the company and provide a better overall experience for employees and customers.
