The mission and vision
The mission and vision
Master Gardener volunteers are committed to providing quality, research-based horticultural information and educational activities that enhance our community’s environment and quality of life.
The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Program shares research-based horticultural knowledge and practices, cultivates diverse collaborations, supports project-based volunteer activities and inspires change to promote healthy people, healthy communities and a healthy planet.
Our vision is that community-based volunteers will use research-based knowledge and develop collaborative relationships to strengthen the important role of plants and horticulture, and the impact on local ecosystems in all Minnesota communities.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who are trained by the University of Minnesota Extension who help educate our community on a plethora of horticulture topics.
The activities of our Master Gardener volunteers with University of Minnesota Extension can be seen benefiting our local farmers markets, community gardens, youth programs, environmental education programs, schools and much more.

We're always looking for volunteers. The best volunteer community has the widest array of expertise and knowledge. Volunteers with gardening knowledge and enjoy sharing it with their greater community are always welcome to check us out.

History fun factThe Master Gardener volunteer program started in 1977 with its first class of 25 people.We've grown to include 2,500 active Master Gardeners who share their horticultural expertise in communities and neighborhoods across our great state. Our volunteers teach research-based gardening principles that inspire change and promote healthy people, healthy communities, and a healthy planet.
